Sunshine State Invitational Moves K-State Rowing to Florida

Mar 31, 2022 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing squad will return to action on Friday (April 1) and Saturday (April 2) for the Sunshine State Invitational hosted by UCF in Sarasota, Florida. The regatta will take place at Nathan Benderson Park.

K-State competed at the Sunshine State Invitational last year and walked away from competition with a bronze medal in the Grand Finals of the Varsity Four race.

The Varsity Four race comprised of UCF, Clemson, Jacksonville, Kansas, Miami (Fla.) and Stetson.

Then redshirt senior Logan Frost, sophomore Ellie Hahn, sophomore Elizabeth Sloan, sophomore Kate Odgers and sophomore coxswain Kaitlyn Henke made up the boat. They were behind host UCF and Clemson with a time of 8:56.43. K-State was one of only three boats to record times less than 9 minutes and outdistanced Big 12 foe Kansas by more than 23 seconds.

Closing out the Sunshine State Invitational on the final day was fifth place finish by Varsity Eight (8:01.36), less than six seconds behind fourth-place Miami, and a sixth-place finish by the Second Varsity Eight boat (8:31.12).

During the first day of competition, the Varsity Four and Varsity Eight Boats also finished in third place among six other programs. K-State would close each race with under 10 seconds of separation from the leaders to finish in the top three for both races.

The Wildcats muscled their way with a pace of 7:15.20 to finish just behind UCF (7:06.69) and Clemson (7:11.23) to conclude Friday's race schedule. Friday's performance from the 1v8+ crew was a repeat from the 2019 event, as that crew attacked the water to place third overall during the evening session.

Recently, K-State took on the Hornet Invitational and concluded the event with impressive performances.

The Wildcats competed against UC San Diego, Sacramento State and Saint Mary's College.

After the Sunshine State Invitational, K-State will head to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16). The regatta will take place on the Melton Hill Lake.
