K-State Rowing Collects Two Silver Medals at Sunshine State Invitational

Apr 03, 2022 | Rowing

SARASOTA, Fla. – The Kansas State women's rowing squad earned silver in the 3v8+ and 1v4+ events at the Sunshine State Invitational on Friday (April 1) and Saturday (April 2) at the Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.

Day One Recap

After 20 mph winds on Thursday (March 31), the wind calmed down for a pleasant 80-degree competition day.

The first boat to advance to their respective Grand Final was the 1v4+. Coming in with a time of 7:25.20 in the first heat, the Wildcats had the third fastest time out of all 11 entries and was 10.05 seconds faster than the first-place crew in heat two. The 1v4+ line up is sophomore coxswain Sydney Smith, sophomores Lindsey DeVreugd and Alyssa Buettner and freshmen Anita Eckhardt and Catie Wood.

"Seeing us walk through boats that we didn't expect to walk through, was something that we needed to do to prove to ourselves we could do this. This turning point was the confidence boost that we needed going into Saturday Morning finals," said coxswain Sydney Smith in reflecting on her heat.

In the first heat of the Division I 2v8+ event, K-State clocked a time of 6:44.26 and clinched a second-place finish, automatically advancing to the Grand Final. This automatic qualifying performance was a huge victory for the crew bringing the energy and excitement up among team members. The boat was made up of sophomore coxswain Kelsey Ladlie, sophomores Lauren Walker and Kaylee Kleinschmit, freshmen Rachel Harman, Anna Ryan, Madison Koller, Symone Simmons and sophomores Patricia Hokanson and Jessica Schenk.

"The whole race was so competitive; we were down half a length on Iowa and in the last 500 meters we came together and made a huge push. I looked over one last time to see we were even with them and we knew we had to go. We stumbled at the very end but recovered as fast as we could. We didn't know if we had qualified, but we knew we were proud of the race we put together. When we finally got our boat down and got the news from Coach Dykmann that we made it through to the Grand Final, we were so proud to learn what we are actually capable of," reflected coxswain Kelsey Ladlie.

Due to fewer entries in the Division I 3v8+ event, the Wildcats raced for lanes against all the opponents they would see in their Grand Final Saturday morning. In a polished run of the course, K-State recorded a time of 7:07.17 and placed fourth. The boat, made entirely of freshmen consisted of coxswain Paige Fox, and rowers Neva Roenne, Jordan Girkin, Grace Hendrickson, Kendra Hamman, Chloe Daniels, Faith Gates, Emily Stark and Halle Fee.

In another race for lanes, another boat made entirely of first year racers put together a clean run of the course to prepare for the Grand Final competition they would face Saturday Morning. Finishing with a time of 8:01.64, the Wildcats placed sixth with the line up coxswain Sarah Schrage and rowers Gracyn McClain, Madelyn Barrett, Jayden Brandt and Annika Senn.

Facing the toughest competition on the course, the 1v8+ prepared to give their heat everything they had. Top coxswain, Lauren Plum led her crew along with stroke seat, junior Ellie Hahn.  Hahn was backed by sophomore Jadyn Greisen, juniors Elizabeth Mummert, Maya Morrow, Madison Jensen and Megan Michaelis, sophomore Idallis Shaffer and junior Kate Odgers. The crew had a time of 6:47.28. This finish time qualified the crew for the Petite Final where they would plan to face again, some serious competition.

Day Two Recap

The 1v8+ Petite Final was the first event of the day. All teams faced a setback on water, with an unexpected amount of prep time before loading into the lanes. K-State clinched third place with a time of 6:42.48.

"This weekend we learned the importance of having confidence in ourselves. Going forward we must continue upping our mental game if we want to continue improving towards Big 12s," said stroke seat Ellie Hahn.

After the excitement of qualifying for the Grand Final the 2v8 was ready for Saturday Morning's competition. With a finish time of 6:40.99, the 'Cats took fifth place, only .38 seconds shy of fourth place Iowa (6:40.61).

Though not the placement they had hoped for, the crew gained some intangibles this weekend facing this level of competition. "With so little on-water time, we proved to ourselves that we can compete with the big dogs. We still have learning to do, and we will continue to get better as racing season go on," said 2v8+ coxswain Kelsey Ladlie.

In the 3v8+ Grand Final it was time for another freshmen crew to battle to the finish line. With a time of 6:49.61, the 3v8+ squad earned the first medal of the weekend. Claiming second and collecting silver medals for K-State.  The crew was one second off Iowa (6:48.19) and finished two seconds faster than Big 12 foe, Kansas (6:51.96).

"In the last 500 meters KU was one seat ahead of us. I knew we had to make a push. My crew was responding, they were answering my demands. It was working. Everything we trained for, it was coming together. We know others overlook us as a Kansas rowing team, but it feels like we showed our competition that we are here to race and we want to win," said 3v8+ coxswain Paige Fox.

Next up it was time for the 1v4+ Grand Final. This bucketed boat had fought hard to make Grand and had a fast time to defend. In full attack mode, K-State snatched a second place finish with a time of 7:26.89. The squad was four seconds ahead of third place and 14 seconds in front of Kansas (7:40.79). "Going into the final build we knew we had to take it up early. We knew our competition would attack the finish so we had to come together to get it done. Taking the time to prepare to this together, made the difference for us," said coxswain Sydney Smith.

Rounding out the Sunshine State Invitational was the 2v4+ Grand Final. K-State finished the event in seventh place with a time of 7:51.40. This young crew leaves the weekend having specifically identified what they need to bring to the next race in order to shave seconds of their next finish time.

There is something undeniable about this team. From the outgoing upperclassmen to the first year racing freshmen, it is clear that this team believes in what each competition means. Freshman Paige Fox said in reflecting on medaling for the 'Cats, "We all train together as a team. All levels, all together, all the time. If we didn't have those older girls showing us how to work, and instilling confidence in us, we wouldn't be heading home with medals. Sweeney tells us that a medal for one crew is a medal for all because it takes all of us to hold this team together. I couldn't be more proud to be wearing a medal for my team this weekend."

The Wildcats will take a short break before heading to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The regatta will take place on Melton Hill Lake from Friday (April 15) to Saturday (April 16).
