Wildcats Travel to Tennessee for SIRA Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing squad will head off to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships Regatta on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16). The regatta will be held on Melton Hill Lake.

The Wildcats will compete in their first race at 11:40 a.m. CT on Friday (April 15) with the novice 4+. Following the event, the novice 8+ will race at 12:10 p.m. CT, then the varsity 4+ at 12:55 p.m. and two boats (the 1v8+ and the 2v8+) will compete at 1:20 p.m. in the varsity 8+. Semifinals will take place in the evening on Friday for the novice 4+ and the novice 8+.

On Saturday, K-State will take on semifinals in the varsity 4+ at 7:14 a.m. CT and the varsity 8+ at 7:42 a.m.

Finals will take place on Saturday afternoon and the Wildcats will aim to have all boats qualify for medal contention.

"Coming off our races in California and Florida, we have continued to review combinations and find more boat speed," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "The team has maintained their focus as we are working toward the championship segment of the season."

So far this season, the Wildcats have competed in the Hornet Invitational on March 19-20 and Sunshine State Invitational on April 1-2.

Most recently at the Sunshine State Invitational, the squad collected two silver medals. The medals came from the 3v8+ and the 1v4+.

"We have improved from race to race even with the difficulties of limited water time at home," said Sweeney. "Each crew is learning more on how to attack every part of race. This weekend is a great opportunity to keep making progress."

K-State hasn't been to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to attend the SIRA Championship Regatta since April 19-20, 2019. The crew was scheduled to attend on April 18-19, 2020, but the regatta was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Back in 2019, the Wildcats brought home three gold medals along with two silver medals.

"The team has continued to work hard and now it's time to put that work into good, solid racing," said Sweeney.

Following this weekend, the Wildcats will move to Omaha, Nebraska for the Creighton Duel on Saturday (April 23).
