Fortushniak, K-State With Strong Final Round
Mar 20, 2022 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. - It wasn't enough to make a climb up the leaderboard, but the Kansas State women's golf team carded an 8-over par 296 third round - its best 18 holes of the weekend - behind great play from Heather Fortushniak on Sunday at the MountainView Collegiate, held at the par-72, 6,352-yard MountainView Golf Club.Â
Â
The Wildcats finished in 15th place at 39-over par 903.Â
Â
"Proud of the ladies' effort today," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We played better today and they kept fighting, which is important. We just didn't play on good golf days one and two. We must continue to improve."
Â
A major reason for the K-State's day-three improvement was the play of Fortushniak, who shined with a 2-under par 70 final round, a score that ties the second-best individual round of her career. The senior finished tied for 70th place at 13-over par 229.Â
Â
"Heather had a great round," Knight said. "We are so capable of four of those on the same day."
Â
Napua Glossner, a sophomore, paced the Cats on the leaderboard and finished tied 55th at 8-over par 224 after a 4-over 76 final round. This is the second event of the spring where Glossner was the team-high finisher.
Â
Manon Donche-Gay finished in a tie for 61st at 11-over par 227. The junior college transfer put together a solid 1-over par 73 final round to make a 10-spot leap in the leaderboard on Sunday.Â
Â
One-shot back from Donche-Gay and in a tie for 65th place at 12-over par 228 was Haley Vargas, who carded a 6-over par 78 third round.Â
Â
Remington Isaac, a freshman, finished tied for 77th place at 16-over par 232 after carding a 5-over par 77 final 18.Â
Gabriela McNelly, who competed as an individual, recorded a 7-over par 79 third round to finish tied for 74th place at 15-over par 231.
No. 23 Texas Tech claimed the team title at 25-under par 839 with a narrow one-stroke victory over No. 8 San Jose State. Kajal Mistry of Arkansas won the individual championship at 10-under par 206.Â
Â
Kansas State will be off the next few weeks before returning to action at The Bruzzy, which is the final event before the Big 12 Championship, April 22-24.
