K-State’s 54th Season Comes to End in NCAA Second Round

Mar 21, 2022 | Women's Basketball

RALEIGH, N.C. – As the only nine-seed to advance to the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, K-State looked to spring the upset on Monday against top-seed NC State, but the Wolfpack used big second and third quarter to down the Wildcats, 89-57, at Reynolds Coliseum.

K-State (20-13) was paced by the duo of freshman Serena Sundell and 2022 All-American Ayoka Lee. Sundell recorded her 19th game in double figures with a team-high 17 points, three rebounds and three assists. In her two matchups with NC State this season, Sundell averaged 19 points and four 3-point field goals per game.

Lee finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. With her eight rebounds, Lee broke the school record for rebounds in a season with 339 and besting the record held by Tammie Romstad of 337 in the 1979-80 season.

Lee ended the season with 727 points to rank second in school history for points in a season. She is the first player in the 54-season history of K-State women's basketball to register a season of 700 or more points, 300 or more rebounds and 90 or more blocks.

The Wildcats were led in the first five and a half minutes of the first quarter by Sundell, as she scored seven of the Wildcats' first 11 points to stake K-State to an 11-10 lead with 4:30 remaining in the opening stanza.

NC State (31-3) would go in front, 17-11, with a 7-0 run over a three-minute span as the Wildcats went without a field goal for the final six and a half minutes. K-State was able to pull within four, 17-13, at the end of the first quarter, as Taylor Lauterbach made a pair of free throws with six seconds to play.

In the second quarter, NC State shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field and outscored K-State by 12, 26-14, in the stanza. The Wildcats shot 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from the field in the second quarter.

The Wolfpack started the first five minutes of the second quarter with a 14-2 run to increase their advantage to 16, 31-15, with 5:29 remaining. Kai Crutchfield registered the first five points of the run before Camille Hobby added a layup to force a K-State timeout.

Following the timeout, NC State went 3-of-3 from the field to boost the lead to 16. Sundell ended the run for the Wolfpack with her second 3-pointer of the first half to bring the Wildcats within 13, 31-18, with 5:16 left in the second quarter. Sundell would finish the first half with 12 points.

On a layup with 4:22 to play in the second quarter, Lee set the single-season school record for field goals made with her 293rd this season and passing the previous record of 292 held by Romstad in the 1979-80 season. Lee ended the first half with eight points and three rebounds.

After Lee brought K-State to within 11 at 31-20 on her record-setting field goal, NC State would expand their first half advantage to 20, 40-20, with a 9-0 run.

The Wildcats battled back to pull to within 16, 43-27, at the half as Rebekah Dallinger buried a 3-pointer before the first half buzzer sounded.

A 10-2 run from NC State early in the third quarter increased the lead for the Wolfpack to 21, 55-34, with 4:52 remaining. NC State was 5-of-7 from the field during the run.

The Wolfpack would shoot 10-of-16 (.625) from the field in the third quarter to hold a 66-39 lead entering the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, NC State received a pair of three-pointers from Diamond Johnson to help build an 80-46 lead with 4:44 remaining.

The Glenn sisters, Brylee and Jaelyn, paired up to go on an 8-0 run among themselves. Brylee made two free throws and Jaelyn added a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Brylee added a 3-pointer of her own with 3:37 left to bring K-State to within 26, 80-54.

K-State completes its 54th season of action with a 20-13 overall record and its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Wildcats will enter the 2022-23 season two wins shy of 1,000 in its history. K-State head coach Jeff Mittie needs one win to reach 600 in his coaching career and five wins to reach 150 during his time in Manhattan.
