Linares Sweeps in Singles to Highlight 6-1 win over Shockers

Mar 27, 2022 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 56 Kansas State women's tennis team closed out Sunday (March 27) with a 6-1 win against Wichita State at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

K-State moves to a record of 8-8 (0-4 Big 12) on the season, while Wichita State drops to a record of 6-11 (3-4 American). The Wildcats finished the weekend with wins over Tulsa and Wichita State.

"Any time you get two wins is great," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "We wanted to get back on track. We kind of had a tough Big 12 start, but I think now with this momentum and a little more confidence puts us back in a good position to try to close out at home next weekend."

The Wildcats started up 1-0 due to a walkover by the Shockers.

Freshman Dinara Alloyarova and sophomore Manami Ukita clinched the doubles point for K-State, as they defeated Jessie Zheng and Clara Whitaker, 6-1.

Senior doubles pair Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares saw their match halted at 3-3 after Alloyarova and Ukita won their doubles match.

Up 2-0 entering singles play, the Wildcats won 4 of 5 singles matches against the Shockers, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep by Linares over Natsumi Kurhashi from Wichita State at the top position.

At the number five spot, senior Anna Turco led the way against Whitaker and earned a point for the Wildcats, 6-3, 6-2. After Turco claimed the fourth point for K-State, both teams decided to play out the match.

Dekkers claimed set one, 6-2, against Zheng, but struggled in set two before rallying to close out it, 7-5, and earned another point for K-State at the number three position.

Defeating Kong from Wichita State was Job in two sets. It was close in set one, but Job closed it out 7-6(0). Nothing was stopping Job from finishing out the match at number two 6-3.

There was a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set for Ukita at the number four spot. Ukita fell in the first set, 6-2, but made a comeback to win 6-3 in the second set. It wasn't enough for Ukita, as she fell in a tiebreaker match 17-15.

The Wildcats will be home for one more weekend on Friday (April 1) to continue conference play against Iowa State and then again on Sunday (April 3) against West Virginia. Sunday's match will represent Senior Day as four Wildcats will be recognized.
