Senior Day Marks End to Homestand for No. 50 K-State

Mar 31, 2022 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 50 Kansas State women's tennis team will end their six-match homestand this weekend with matches against No. 33 Iowa State on Friday (April 1) and West Virginia on Sunday (April 3) at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

K-State (8-8, 0-4 Big 12) will celebrate Senior Day prior to Sunday's match, which is set for 12 p.m., CT, by honoring seniors Maria Linares, Karine-Marion Job, Anna Turco and Ioana Gheorghita.

Friday's match will be International Students Day and begin at 4 p.m., CT.

"It is crazy that it is our final home weekend of the season," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "I'm excited that we got back on track last weekend with two solid wins. Great opportunity ahead for us to pave our way into post season with matches against ISU and WVU. Also, I'm really pumped to honor our four seniors this Sunday. They have done so much for this program on and off the court. Each of them has left their own imprint and legacy on K-State tennis. We couldn't be more thankful and proud of them. I look forward to seeing their strong finish."

The Wildcats snapped their five-match losing streak by defeating No. 41 Tulsa 4-2 and Wichita State 6-1 at home last weekend.

Linares highlighted the matchup against Wichita State on March 27 as she swept Natsumi Kurahashi, 6-0, 6-0, at the number one spot. This was the second time this season that Linares had played in the number one position, the first being against Laia Conde Monfort from Tulsa on March 26.

K-State began the match versus Wichita State up 1-0 after the Shockers did not have enough players for all six courts in singles play. With not enough players, the Wildcats automatically were ahead in doubles and only needed to win one of the two matches to clinch the doubles point.

Freshman Dinara Alloyarova and sophomore Manami Ukita were in control the whole match as they defeated Jessie Zheng and Clara Whitaker, 6-1, claiming the doubles point for K-State.

In singles play, four Wildcats closed out their matches in two sets, while Ukita fell in three to Harriet Hamilton. Ukita's final set ended with a score of 17-15.

After this weekend, the Wildcats will hit the road to play No. 23 Baylor (April 8), No. 4 Texas (April 10) and No. 22 Kansas (April 16) before moving to Fort Worth, Texas to play at the 2022 Big 12 Championships on April 21-24.
