K-State Holds Back TCU to Pick Up Road Win

Mar 05, 2022 | Women's Basketball

FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State used 3-point shooting in the second and third quarters to create a double figure lead and then overcame an early fourth quarter drought to send TCU to its 13th consecutive loss, 61-50, at Schollmaier Arena on Saturday afternoon.

With its win on Saturday, K-State (19-11, 9-9 Big 12) secured its 19th win of the season, marking the fifth time in Jeff Mittie's eight seasons in which the Wildcats have win 19 or more games. This is the fourth time in Mittie era in which K-State has won nine or more Big 12 games.

K-State (19-11, 9-9 Big 12) went out in front, 13-8, at the end of the first quarter despite eight turnovers in the opening stanza. The Wildcats held the Horned Frogs to 3-of-17 shooting. Ayoka Lee recorded six points and four rebounds in just six minutes, as she was saddled with foul trouble.

In the second quarter, K-State built a 10-point lead, 26-16, with 4:46 remaining as Serena Sundell buried three of the Wildcats' four 3-pointers to begin the frame. TCU (6-21, 2-16 Big 12) rallied back with a 6-0 run to pull within four, 26-22, before Cymone Goodrich made a free throw to stake K-State to a 27-22 lead at the half.

The Wildcats found Lee to begin the third quarter, as she tallied seven of K-State's first nine points to build a 36-28 lead with 5:07 remaining.

K-State would then get hot from beyond the arc, as Rebekah Dallinger knocked down a corner 3-pointer followed by two 3-pointers from Serena Sundell to increase the advantage to 45-31 with 3:08 remaining in the third frame.

After play resumed from a TCU timeout, Laura Macke added another K-State three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 48-33 lead at the end of the third. The Wildcats were 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the third quarter to outscore the Horned Frogs 21-11.

Over the two quarters, the Wildcats were 8-of-15 from 3-point range.

K-State went cold from the field in the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, shooting 0-of-8 from the floor as TCU pulled to within five, 48-43, with 4:46 on the back of a 10-0 run.

The Wildcats were in need of a basket to generate momentum and found Macke open for a top of the key 3-pointer to end its drought and push the lead back to 51-43 with 3:57 remaining. The three-pointer jump started a 12-5 run for the Wildcats.

After a layup from the Horned Frogs, Lee registered six straight points for the Wildcats to increase the K-State lead to 57-45 with 1:32 left. K-State was then able to seal the win from the foul line.

K-State featured three players in double figures for the 13th time this season, as Lee led the way with 20 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. This was Lee's 19th double-double of the season, tying her own school record for double-doubles in a season.

With her 11 rebounds, Lee joins Peyton Williams as the only two players in program history with 300 or more rebounds in two or more seasons as Lee increased her season total to 309. Lee is the only player in the nation with 675 or more points, 300 or more rebounds and 90 or more blocks.

Joining Lee was Sundell with 18 points including a 5-of-8 effort from the 3-point line. Sundell also added four rebounds and four assists.

Off the bench, Macke chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds. This was her second straight road game in double figures.

Kansas State ended the afternoon shooting 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field including a 9-of-23 effort (.391) from 3-point range. The Wildcats outrebounded the Horned Frogs, 41-37, and held TCU to a 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the floor including 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from 3-point range.

K-State turns its attention to the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships. The Wildcats are slated as the sixth seed and will face the third seed on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium. Session and single-game tickets are available at big12sports.com.
