Steward, Kasunic Lead 5,000 Meters at John Jacobs Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. – Juniors Cailan Steward and Katie Kasunic went 1-2 in the women's 5,000 meters to highlight the Kansas State track and field team at the John Jacobs Invitational on Friday (April 22).
 
With a time of 18:14.31, Steward placed first overall in the 5,000 meters out of 13 competitors, while Kasunic was second with a time of 18:24.28. Finishing out the race for the Wildcats was freshman Kate Kowalik in seventh with a time of 19:25.82.
 
In the men's 5,000-meter run, junior Jack Moore clocked in at 15:16.63 and came in second place overall.
 
"The guys and girls ran well under very windy conditions," stated assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "We knew the stopwatch wouldn't be able to tell the whole story."
 
Representing K-State in the men's hammer throw was sophomore Kade McCall. On his sixth and final attempt, McCall clinched third place with a throw of 65.19m/213-10.
 
Placing fourth in the women's long jump was freshman Velecia Williams. On her second attempt, Williams leaped to a mark of 5.96m/19-6.75.
 
Leading the way in the women's shot put was sophomore Jasmine Greer. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native claimed sixth place with a heave of 15.42m/50-7.25. Following right behind Greer was sophomore Jaycee Schroeder in seventh with a personal best throw of 14.95m/49-0.75 and sophomore Grace Thompson in eighth with a personal best mark of 14.59m/47-10.50. Rounding out the event was junior Urte Bacianskaite in 10th (13.94m/45-9) and freshman Madelyn McCabe in 15th (12.05m/39-6.50).
 
The Wildcats had four competitors in the men's shot put. Leading the pack was freshman Darius O'Connell in sixth place with a personal-best mark of 16.28m/53-5. Close behind was sophomore Jackson Gibbon in eighth place with a personal-best throw of 15.81m/51-10.50. Fifth year senior Tejaswin Shankar finished in 14th (13.28m/43-7) with freshman Emil Uhlin in 17th (12.67m/41-7).
 
Finishing out the day was the women's hammer throw. Sophomore Lacey Pavlak came in sixth place with a throw of 51.76m/169-9, while sophomore Emily Fuhr placed eighth with a heave of 50.48m/165-7.
 
K-State will return to the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex on Saturday (April 23) for day two. Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m., CT with the women's javelin throw. Running events will commence at 12:30 p.m., CT with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
