K-State Meets No. 4 Texas Tech in Big 12 Road Test

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State hits the road for its second Big 12 road test, as the Wildcats take on fourth-ranked Texas Tech at Dan Law Field in a three-game series starting Friday.

The Wildcats have won back-to-back games after a 7-5 victory over Creighton Tuesday night in which they hit four home runs and struck out 18 batters – one shy of their single-game record set in 1976.

Nick Goodwin, Dominic Johnson, Dylan Phillips and Orlando Salinas all homered, as the Cats have tallied 12 homers over their last four games.

Last weekend against sixth-ranked Oklahoma State, K-State totaled eight home runs with three coming in a 7-2 win in the series finale last Sunday. K-State and Texas Tech are both in the top three in the Big 12 in total home runs.

The Red Raiders will mark the third consecutive top-20 opponent the Wildcats will face to open their conference slate and the second straight in the top 10. Last season, K-State took three of four games from TTU, including knocking Tech out of the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship in Oklahoma City.

A LOOK AT K-STATE
K-State hits the road for its second Big 12 road test against No. 4 Texas Tech, with the three-game series starting Friday at Dan Law Field ... The Wildcats enter the weekend having won back-to-back games, defeating Creighton 7-5 on Tuesday night after taking down No. 6 Oklahoma State Sunday 7-2 ... Against the Bluejays, K-State tallied four home runs, which accounted for six of its seven runs, while its pitching staff picked up a season-high 18 strikeouts ... Starter Wesley Moore (8) and Blake Corsentino (9) each set career highs while each tossed 3 1/3 innings ... The 18 total punchouts were one shy of equaling the program' single-game record of 19 set in 1976 against Wayne State ... Nick Goodwin, Dominic Johnson, Dylan Phillips and Orlando Salinas each homered against Creighton ... Phillips launched his fifth homer in his last six games while Goodwin and Salinas homered for the second straight game ... Over the last four contests, the Cats have launched 12 home runs ... in the series against the Cowboys, Phillips became K-State's career home run leader, breaking the mark set by Scott Poepard that had stood for 25 years with two home runs ... Phillips finished with three homers in the weekend series and four over the week, earning him Big 12 Player of the Week honors on Monday ... He slashed .438/.609/1.250 over five games with four home runs and seven RBI ... Sunday's victory marked the Cats' first home win over OSU since 2010 and snapped a 13-game skid overall in the series ... The win also marked K-State's first ranked win of the season (1-6) and the 14th ranked win under fourth-year head coach Pete Hughes ... The Wildcat offense hit eight home runs against Oklahoma State, with six players recording at least one.
 
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech (24-8, 4-2 Big 12) enters the weekend having lost its last three games after being swept in two midweek games at Grand Canyon and taking two of three games at Kansas last weekend ... The Red Raiders are ranked as high as No. 4 in the national polls and lead the Big 12 with 48 home runs and ranks second with their .305 average ... Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Jace Jung paces TTU's offense with a .407 average, .542 on-base percentage, .763 slugging percentage along with nine home runs and 13 doubles ... Four Red Raiders are currently in the league's top 10 in home runs: Jung (9), Parker Kelly (8), Ty Coleman (6) and Kurt Wilson (6) ... On the mound, Texas Tech owns an ERA of 4.52, striking out 322 with 107 walks ... Brandon Birdsell's 58 strikeouts are second-most in the conference with Andrew Morris' 45 are tied for sixth-most ... TTU has lost three straight for the second time this season and is 15-1 at home.

Phillips tied Scott Poepard's record of 37 in Friday night's contest before breaking it in the first inning Saturday ... Poepard's record had stood since 1997 (25 years), as Phillips now has 40 career homers after his three-run shot Tuesday against Creighton ...  Saturday marked Phillips' seventh career multi-homer game and second of the season ... His record-breaking performance last week earned him Big 12 Player of the Week honors, the first weekly award of his career ... Phillips hit four homers last week while driving in seven ... His 39 career homers are tied for eighth among active players in Division I and tops in the Big 12 ... The Omaha product tied the program's single-season home run record last season with 16 bombs, ranking second in the Big 12 ... His 16 homers were the most by a Wildcat since Poepard and Heath Schesser both did it during the 1997 season ... Phillips was K-State's lone representative on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team while also earning Preseason Third Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball.
 
NO HELP FROM THE SCHEDULE-MAKERS
For the second straight year, K-State will begin its Big 12 slate with the toughest opening stretch in conference history (past or present Big 12 members) ...
