May 12, 2022 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State track and field team will kick off the postseason with the 2022 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 in Lubbock, Texas at Fuller Track and Field.
The first event will begin at 11 a.m., CT with the women's hammer throw on Friday (May 13). Saturday (May 14) will start at 11 a.m., CT with the 110-meter hurdles of the men's decathlon, while Sunday (May 15) will take place at 12 p.m., CT with the women's discus throw.
"The competition will be outstanding in every event," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Our conference has a number of events that are as high in quality as any conference in the country. Some of the events where perhaps the quality is not quite as high, there are a number of athletes capable of winning, so the individual competition will be fierce. I believe that Texas has the best women's team our conference has ever seen. On the men's side, Texas and Texas Tech will battle for the championship and they both are outstanding teams. As for our team, we have a number of athletes who are ready to perform at a high level. I know that those who are competing will compete well and are looking forward to the weekend."
K-State enters the Big 12 Championships with a number of athletes who rank among the top-30 nationally in respective events, including a pair in the men's high jump (Tejaswin Shankar and Kamyren Garrett), Tommi Hintnaus in the women's pole vault, Kade McCall and Emma Robbins in the men's and women's hammer, Luke Ralston in the men's javelin and Urte Bacianskaite in the women's heptathlon.
Both K-State teams finished in the top-4 at last season's Big 12 Championship, which they hosted at R.V. Christian Track, as the women's team finished in second place with 114 points and the men's team finished fourth with 88 points. The Wildcat women have placed among the top-3 at the conference's outdoor meet in five consecutive seasons, including championships in 2017 and 2018. The men have finished fourth place or better at each of the last 3 outdoor championships.
Shankar is the two-time defending Big 12 champion in the men's high jump, while the fifth-year senior also finished fourth in the triple jump in 2021. Several other Wildcats return who earned strong performances a year ago, including Matas Adamonis (third in decathlon), Vitoria Alves (fifth in women's 100-meter hurdles), Kassidy Johnson (fourth in the women's 1,500 meters), Briana Lowe (fifth in the women's javelin), Kade McCall (sixth in men's hammer), Wurrie Njadoe (sixth in the women's long jump) and Luke Ralston (fifth in the men's javelin).
K-State is coming off a strong ending to the regular season at the Ward Haylett Invitational, May 6-7, at the R.V. Christian Track. The Wildcats claimed six first-place finishes with nine personal bests on day one.
Bacianskaite crushed her previous personal best in the javelin throw by nearly seven meters, earning first place with a mark of 47.20m.
