Robbins, McCall Receive Silver on Day One of Big 12 Outdoors
May 13, 2022 | Track & Field
LUBBOCK, Texas – Two runner-up finishes led the Kansas State track and field team on the first day of the 2022 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 13) at the Fuller Track and Field.
The K-State men lead after day one with 20 points, while the women are in sixth place with 10 points.
"Overall, I thought we competed well today," said assistant coach Greg Watson. "When you come to these championship meets, we look to put as many points on the board for our team as we can. So, Kade (McCall) and Emma (Robbins) securing second was food for them and then finishing the night with three men in the final of the javelin was a good way to end the evening. I think they all might agree that we can still find ways to produce better throws and we will look to do that as we continue to progress towards the NCAA Championships."
Junior Emma Robbins claimed the runner-up spot in the women's hammer throw with a heave of 66.17m/217-1, earning a silver medal. Close behind Robbins was sophomore Lacey Pavlack in ninth with a personal-best throw of 54.38m/178-5 and 11th went to sophomore Emily Fuhr with a mark of 51.90/170-3, a new personal best.
Sophomore Kade McCall took home silver in the men's hammer throw. The Boise, Idaho native threw to a mark of 67.31m/220-10, just .25 meters off his school record mark of 67.56m/221-8.
In addition to the performances by Robbins and McCall, the Wildcats got off to strong starts in the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon on Friday.
In the first five events of the decathlon, fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar leads the Wildcats in first place with 4,346 points in his first decathlon. In fifth is freshman Emil Uhlin with 3,896 points.
Junior Urte Bacianskaite and sophomore Madelyn McCabe each sit in the top-9 after four events of the heptathlon, as Bacianskaite is in second place with 3,448 points and McCabe is in ninth with 3,025 points.
"This is Tejaswin Shankar's first decathlon he has ever done," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Regardless of the training that has been done to go out and do it under the lights is different. He ran great in the 100 and has a very good long jump result, but on his best jump, he was four to five inches behind the board. Emil (Uhlin) did a nice job too. Personal best or near personal best in every event other than high jump. Urte (Bacianskaite) did well, but did an outstanding job at competing. If we just do what we are capable of tomorrow, we should have some good scores and place well."
The Wildcats also received strong efforts in the men's and women's javelin throws.
Fourth, fifth and sixth place went to the Wildcats in the men's javelin throw. Sophomore Luke Ralston led the pack in fourth (66.10m/216-10), sophomore Joe Placek clinched fifth (61.78m/202-8) and senior Matas Adamonis closed out the event in sixth (59.35m/194-8).
Bacianskaite also competed in the women's javelin throw and placed seventh with a throw of 42.98m/141-0. Junior Madeline Righter was 10th (40.53m/132-11) and junior Briana Lowe was 12th (38.17m/128-6).
