Shankar Finishes Third in First Career Decathlon at Big 12 Outdoors

May 14, 2022 | Track & Field

LUBBOCK, Texas – Fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar earned bronze in his first career decathlon at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships to highlight Kansas State's efforts at the Fuller Track and Field on Saturday (May 14).

The Wildcats finished the day with 36 points on the men's side and are currently in fifth place. On the women's side, K-State is in sixth place with 22 points.

"It goes without saying that Tejaswin Shankar did a wonderful job in his first decathlon," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "He had some great events and really competed well throughout. Emil (Uhlin) I thought was spectacular. He had a mishap in the hurdles that in and of itself was a tremendous 'save'. What he did in every event today after that was absolutely spectacular. I don't know if I have ever been prouder of two guys and how they competed over the past two days. Scoring wise thus far has been fairly good, but we had hoped to qualify a little better."

Shankar finished the decathlon with 7,592 points, while freshman Emil Uhlin came in fourth with 7,587 points.

Starting off the day for the decathlon was the 110-meter hurdles. Shankar ran a personal-best time of 14.66 with Uhlin in 16th with 16.86.

Uhlin made a comeback in the men's discus throw of the decathlon after a personal-best heave of 43.22m/141-9 put him in first place. Shankar had a throw of 35.35m/115-11 and finished ninth.

In the pole vault section, both Shankar and Uhlin reached personal-best heights. Uhlin had a height of 4.81m/16-1.25 (second) and Shankar reached 3.81m/12-6 (15th).
