Jul 18, 2022 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the 12th consecutive year, Kansas State volleyball was recognized with the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 academic year, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Monday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team grade-point average of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 20th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of 12 straight awards extends the longest such stretch in program history, five years longer than its next-best streak of seven straight awards from 2001-02 through 2007-08.
The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, eight Cats were named to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Teams, with seven being first-team selections. As a team, K-State boasted a 3.377 GPA during the fall and a 3.392 team GPA in the spring semester.
Junior middle blocker Kadye Fernholz, senior defensive specialist Loren Hinkle and junior libero Mackenzie Morris each turned in perfect 4.0 GPAs in both the fall and spring semesters.
The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated in 1992-93 and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year. This year, more than 1,200 teams earned the award.
Six of nine teams in the Big 12 received the 2021-22 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.
The Wildcats return seven letterwinners and five starters from last year's squad that qualified for the 2022 NCAA Volleyball Championship, including unanimous preseason All-Big 12 pick Aliyah Carter. It marked the 18th all-time postseason appearance in program history and the 13th under head coach Suzie Fritz, who enters her 22nd season leading the Cats.
Season tickets for the 2022 season are now on sale and can be purchased at K-StateSports.com/Tickets, calling 1-800-221-CATS or by stopping by the K-State Athletics Ticket Office inside Bramlage Coliseum.
