Women's Tennis to Compete in San Diego Tournament

K-State will compete in it's first collegiate fall tournament on Thursday
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State tennis team is set to compete in the Women's Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of San Diego starting on Thursday (September 29).
Sophomore Florentine Dekkers, freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska, senior Rosanna Maffei and freshman Vanesa Suarez will all compete in singles and doubles matches at the Hogan Tennis Center in a single elimination draw.
On Thursday, the first round of singles starts with Maffei facing North Texas' Jasmine Adams and Gruszczynka facing USC' Gabrielle Lee in matches starting at noon CT. Suarez will face UCLA's Vanessa Ong at 12:15 p.m. CT, while Dekkers opponent will first win a play-in match before competing at 4 p.m. CT.
Both doubles teams will not have to compete in the first round, as their first matches will both start at noon CT on Friday (September 30). Suarez and Maffei will face Iowa's Barbora Pokorna and Daianne Hayashida while Gruszczynksa and Dekkers will face San Diego's Kailey Evans and Claudia De Las Heras.
This is the second consecutive year the Wildcats have traveled to San Diego during the fall schedule as they competed in the ITA National Fall Championships last year at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Dekkers, Gruszczynska and Suarez all saw their first action of the fall earlier in the week at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit 15k in Hilton Head, S.C., on Sept. 26.
Dekkers and Suarez made it to the second round of singles qualifiers after defeating their opponents, Emma Lella and Alexandra Viktorovich. Dekkers won in two sets 6-4, 6-4 and Suarez in three, 6-2, 2-6 and in the tiebreaker 10-8. Gruszczynska fell to Maria Aran Teixido Garcia in the first round by two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
In the last round before entering the main draw Suarez was defeated by Monique Woog in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
In the final qualifying round Dekkers defeated Marina Skegro in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Dekkers advanced to the first round of the main draw on Sept. 27 and faced Anastasiya Lopata before falling in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
