Bolding Reaches Milestone in Loss to No. 18 Baylor

Oct 07, 2023 | Volleyball

WACO, Texas Middle blocker Sydney Bolding was awarded her 300th career block Friday night against the No. 18 Baylor, but the Bears managed to split the series with a four-set win (27-29, 20-25, 25-16, 17-25), at Ferrell Center.

A native of Pickens, S.C., Bolding was credited No. 300 in just her 66th match as a Wildcat. With a season average of 1.53, the graduate student currently leads the K-State rally-scoring era while her 1.30 career average is second.

Bolding is the second Wildcat to reach 300 blocks this season, joining senior Kadye Fernholz, who is four blocks away from joining the Cats top 10 rally-scoring era leaderboard.

K-State (9-6, 3-3 Big 12) collected 52 kills (.224), led offensively by Aliyah Carter with a season-best 21 kills. The senior outside hitter turned in her 14th career match with 20 or more kills as she hit .255. Carter totaled 40 kills in the series to go along with 28 digs.

Setters Izzi Szulczewski and Loren Hinkle combined for 48 of the Wildcats 50 assists to pace the 6-2 offense.

Defensively, the Wildcats out-blocked Baylor 12.0-5.0, moving to 8-1 against opponents when out-blocking opponents. With 17 digs, senior libero Mackenzie Morris brought her career total to 1,515, ranking fifth all-time in K-State history.

Baylor (8-7, 2-3 Big 12) tallied 57 kills on a .236 clip against the Wildcats. Two Bears combined for 29 kills with Elise McGhee (15) and Manuela Bibinbe (14).

FROM THE HEAD COACH
Head Coach Jason Mansfield
On overall statement…
"I'm really proud of how we came to play in the first set. These back-to-back matches are both physically and mentally tough, but I thought we showed up tonight after last night's battle. Baylor tried some different serves and tactics on offense that we struggled to adjust to in the first two sets. The third set was more in line with how we know how to play, and we had our chances in the fourth. I truly believe we grew a lot as a team this week, and I'm excited to get back in the gym and keep trying to find ways to be better.

On the offense…
"Both Loren and Izzi ran a really good offense in both matches and Aliyah took a lot of good swings against a good defensive team, getting a lot of kills in a variety of ways."

On the defense…
"Our defense continues to keep us in matches, I thought Mackenzie was really spectacular again in the backrow. Sydney getting her 300th block is special; she continues to change the game. Opposing offenses have to adjust and try to attack away from her."
