MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's golf team will tee off its spring season at the FAU Paradise Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday on the par-72, 6,204-yard Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton, Florida.
The forecast in Boca Raton shows clear skies and temperatures in the high 70s, a picture-perfect start to an exciting spring campaign for this Wildcat squad.
"It is exciting to get started," said head coach Kristi Knight, the longest-tenured coach in the Big 12. "Osprey Point in Boca Raton provides a great opportunity for us."
Representing the Cats in the scoring lineup are Haley Vargas, Manon Donche-Gay, Remington Isaac, Napua Glossner and Kate Tilma. Noa Van Beek will also be at Osprey Point competing as an individual.
Vargas, a senior, was the top performer for the Wildcats throughout the fall slate. She leads the team in stroke average (73.41), score differentials (4.83), and she has had 100 percent of her rounds contribute towards the team score.
Vargas really showed off her talent at the Dale McNamara Invitational where she tied for third place at 1-under par 215. It was the lowest 54-hole score from a Wildcat in the past two seasons.
After leading K-State on the leaderboard in its last three events, Vargas is primed for a big spring season.
"The team is very excited to start our spring season and compete again," said Vargas.
"A major goal of our team is to climb up the rankings as much as we can, and play in May."
Another senior helping to provide veteran leadership is Donche-Gay, who has been a staple in the scoring lineup throughout her time at K-State. This will be her 12th appearance as a lineup member in just two seasons since transferring from the community college ranks. Donche-Gay is second on the team in stroke average at 75.08.
Next on the lineup card is Isaac, who contains about as much experience as any sophomore in the country. This will be her 13th career scoring lineup appearance after she burst onto the scene last season as a freshman.
Glossner, a junior from San Diego, California, stayed busy during the winter break, as she finished tied for 12th place at the Cactus Collegiate Tour Challenge.
Making her scoring lineup debut is Tilma, a prime example of the young talent on this year's team. She is an exciting freshman from Wichita, Kansas, and will be looking to make some noise during her second semester.
Van Beek, another talented freshman, will be making her third career appearance, this time as an individual. Her young career is so far highlighted by an impressive showing at the Dale McNamara Invitational, which included an even-par 72 final round. It was one of just three even or under-par rounds shot by Wildcats during the fall.
Joining the Wildcats and host-school Florida Atlantic in a 14-team field is BYU, Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Missouri, Nebraska, South Florida, UTSA, No. 19 Vanderbilt and Wisconsin. The test in Boca Raton will be a good measuring stick for a challenging spring schedule ahead.
Play will begin with two rounds on Monday before the final round on Tuesday. It will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start both days. Fans can follow along with the action on Golfstat.com.
