K-State Upset Bid Comes Up Shy in Overtime

NORMAN, Oklahoma – K-State rallied from a 22-point second quarter deficit to hold a four-point lead near the end of regulation, but (16/13) Oklahoma rallied to capture a 90-86 win in overtime at the Lloyd Noble Center on Wednesday night.
K-State (16-14, 5-12 Big 12) put four in double figures led by a career-high 33-points by sophomore guard Serena Sundell. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week was 11-of-17 from the field, dished out four assists and pocketed three steals.
Sophomore Jaelyn Glenn carded 21 points, seven rebounds, tied her career-high with six steals and dished three assists.
Senior Gabby Gregory notched 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in her return to Norman. Freshman Eliza Maupin carded a career-high 14 points and chipped in with five rebounds, a steal and a block.
Oklahoma (23-5, 13-4) placed five in double figures and led by the bench effort of Skylar Vann with 23 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oklahoma took control of the first quarter with an 18-2 run over the final 7:40 of the frame to build a 24-8 advantage at the end of the quarter. K-State shot 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from the field in the quarter and were held without a field goal for the final 4:38 of the quarter.
- The Sooners would increase its lead to 22, 30-8, with 8:30 to play in the second quarter and force a Wildcat timeout. The Wildcats would close to 13, 36-23, as Jaelyn Glenn made her second 3-pointer of the night with 3:29 remaining.
- Oklahoma would take the advantage back out to 20, 45-25, on a Taylor Robertson three-pointer but layups from Serena Sundell and Eliza Maupin closed the margin to 16, 45-29, at halftime.
- K-State raced back into the game with an 18-3 run in the third quarter to close the gap to four, 51-47, with 4:50 to play in the third quarter. During the run, Gabby Gregory hit her first three 3-pointers of the night including her third to force an Oklahoma timeout with under five minutes to play in the frame.
- The Wildcats would pull to within one point, 58-57, at the end of the third quarter, as K-State outscored the Sooners, 28-13. K-State would make eight of their final 10 shots from the field.
- Sundell's second 3-pointer of the night opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and gave K-State its first lead of the night, 60-58, with 9:01 to play. However, K-State went scoreless for the next three-plus minutes as the Sooners went back in front by six, 66-60, with 5:48 remaining in regulation.
- K-State went back in front, 72-70, on a Sundell layup with 2:05 remaining. The Wildcats increased its advantage to four, 77-73, on a pair of Jaelyn Glenn free throws with 27 seconds left.
- A layup by Oklahoma's Skylar Vann with two second remaining squared the game at 78 and sent the game to an extra session. The Wildcats were outscored 5-1 in the final 26 seconds.
- Oklahoma went in front on a three-pointer by Taylor Robertson to begin overtime late in the shot clock. The Sooners would hold the lead for the entirety of the overtime session.
- The Wildcats shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the field, including 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from three-point range. K-State was an uncustomary 60.0 percent (18-of-30) from the foul line.
- Oklahoma ended the night shooting 42.3 percent (30-of-71) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from 3-point range. The Sooners turned the ball over 26 times, including 18 from K-State steals, which led to a 35-12 advantage in points off turnovers for the Wildcats.
