K-State Drop First Big 12 Match 4-2 to West Virginia

The Wildcats meet No. 10 Iowa State on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team started off Big 12 play on Friday (March 10) with a 4-2 result against No. 61 West Virginia at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, West Virginia.
K-State (2-11, 0-1 Big 12) and West Virginia (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) started off on four courts, not competing on courts five and six until the match was completed with freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska and junior Aleen Quamar being the last two Wildcats to compete.
The Mountaineers won the doubles point as it came down to Vanesa Suarez and Manami Ukita in the No. 1 spot against Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang, as they came up just shy in the tiebreaker point 7-6 (7-3).
Florentine Dekkers and Quamar defeated Pei-Ju Hsieh and Maja Dodik in the No. 3 position, 6-4, after Gruszczynska and Rosanna Maffei dropped the first match 6-2 against Momoko Nagato and Michaela Kucharova in the No. 2 spot.
Dekkers and Quamar have won all three of their matches together, now on a 3-match doubles win streak.
Maffei and Ukita helped secure two points in singles play, as Maffei defeated Ting-Pei Chang in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot, while Ukita was victorious against Momoko Nagato in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. Ukita now with a 3-match singles win streak.
Suarez in the No. 3 position was defeated by Michaela Kucharova 6-1, 6-4. Dekkers fought through three sets against Camilla Bossi in the No. 1 position, but ultimately came up short 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Gruszczynska battled in three sets against Maja Dodik in the No. 5 position but after winning the second set she could not keep up and dropped the third set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Quamar's match against Tatiana Lipatova was the only one left unfinished as she dropped the first set 6-4 and was fighting back in the second set 3-1 in the No. 6 spot.
This was the first match the Wildcats have dropped to the Mountaineers in seven years.
The Wildcats will face No. 10 Iowa State (11-2, 1-0 Big 12) on Sunday (March 12) in Ames, Iowa at Lifetime Fitness. The Cyclones were victorious in their first Big 12 match against No. 13 Kansas, 6-1, on Friday.
