K-State Set for The Johnnie-O
Mar 12, 2023 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 25th-ranked Kansas State men's golf team is ready for its next challenge on the spring slate, the Johnnie-O, held Monday and Tuesday at the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club.Â
"We are looking forward to a great tournament at Sea Island," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The Seaside Course is not only a PGA Tour venue but also one of the top courses in the country. The driving areas are fairly generous, but you have to be very precise into the greens. Avoiding short-side misses and being below the hole is going to be key for us this week."
K-State is coming off a second-place finish at the Colleton River Collegiate, a performance that saw the Cats record a 19-under par 269 first round, which was the second-lowest round in school history. They would finish the event with a season-best 54-hole score at 32-under par 832, which ranks as the eighth lowest in school history.Â
It was the fifth top-five finish in a season that has already seen K-State win three team championships.
Robbins will send out Will Hopkins, Tim Tillmanns, Nicklaus Mason, Cooper Schultz, and Luke O'Neill in the five-man scoring lineup, with freshman Ben Stoller competing as an indivudal.
Mason is coming off his career-high finish (T2nd) and career-low score (205) at Colleton River. It was the sophomore's fourth top-five finish of his career and third of the season, which is a team-best.Â
Tillmanns and Hopkins continue their streak of lineup appearances this season and have combined for eight top-20 finishes this season, while Schultz returns to the lineup after a 13th-place finish at Colleton River. O'Neill will be making his third consecutive lineup appearance.
The event is hosted by Rutgers, which will welcome a 13-team field that includes No. 30 Cincinnati, Iowa, Kansas, Memphis, No. 50 Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 42 Notre Dame, No. 37 Ohio State, Penn State, Toledo, and No. 43 UNCG.Â
Two rounds of the 54-hole event are scheduled for Monday, before a final round on Tuesday. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com.
