Freshmen Compete for First Time, 4 First Place Finishes for Wildcats

The meet continues tomorrow with the field events starting at 11 a.m.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the outdoor season at the UTSA Invitational on Friday (March 17) in San Antonio, Texas at the Park West Athletics Complex.
K-State had a solid start during the first day of the outdoor season, four Wildcats winning their respective events, four also competing in their first collegiate outdoor meet, with 11 overall finishing in the top-5.
Junior Joe Placek set a new personal best in the men's javelin throw with a winning distance of 65.68m/215-6, his previous best from the same meet last season was 62.46m/204-11. Junior Kade McCall won the men's hammer throw with a distance of 65.87m/216-01. Sophomore Tommy Hazen won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.27.
Junior Hannah Stewart won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:32.56, freshmen Grace Meyer (2nd; 11:09.22) and Cecilia Fisher (3rd; 11:12.43) right behind as they competed in their first outdoor meet.
Freshman Babs Koeman competed for the first time collegiately in the women's shot put with a distance of 9.57m/31-4.75, along with Saydee Tanking in the women's javelin throw with a seventh-place distance of 37.11m/121-9.
Junior Emma Robbins took second place in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 59.23m/194-04, junior Jasmine Greer also finishing second in her event, the women's shot put, at 15.28m/50-1.75, sophomore Grace Thompson (3rd; 15.17m/49-9.25) finishing right behind her.
Juniors Briana Lowe (3rd; 45.11m/148-0) and Baylee Unruh (5th; 41.22m/135-3) also competed in the women's javelin, Unruh in her first meet of the season.
The UTSA Invitational continues tomorrow (March 18) with the field events starting at 11 a.m. CT with the men's pole vault, the track events beginning at 2 p.m. CT with the women's 4x100 relay.
