K-State Finishes Strong at First Outdoor Meet of Season

Wildcats head to Emporia State on Thursday March 23 for the ESU Relays
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the first meet of the outdoor season in the UTSA Invitational on Saturday (March 18) with five event titles at the Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio, Texas.
In addition to the five titles, three Wildcats competed in their first outdoor events, and four more upperclassmen achieved new personal bests.
Four of the five titles came in running events, including a sweep of the 1,500 meters by junior Jessica Caraway (4:51.36) and senior Stephen Kielhofner (3:57.28). Junior Sydney Burton won the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:17.97. The women's 4x400 relay 'B' team consisting of freshman Delaney Wright, sophomore Madelyn McCabe, junior Maddie Righter and freshman Babs Koeman won with a time of 4:05.20.
Sophomore Kam Garrett and junior Devon Richardson took first and second in the men's high jump with a height of 2.05m/6-8.75, Garrett clearing on his first attempt, Richardson on his third.
Junior Shalom Olotu finished second in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.78m/18-11.75. Freshman Jhavor Bennett took second in the men's triple jump with a jump of 14.77m/48-5.50.
Freshman Tamaiah Koonce competed in her first outdoor meet in the women's discus throw, with a sixth place finish of 43.68m/143-4. Junior Aubry Donley joined the Wildcats as a walk-on and competed in the 1,500 meters with a fourth place time of 4:56.87.
Along with Kielhofner, four men competed in two distance events, the 800 meters and 1,500 meters. Junior Hadley Splechter finished second in both events, in 800 meters in 1:55.86 and 1,500 meters with a time of 3:59.33. Sophomore Matthew Hauser competed in both for the first time, finishing fourth in the 800 meters (1:56.78) and fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:00.52). Sophomore Mike Rohlinger placed fifth in the 800 meters at 1:56.79 and sixth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.61. Junior Jack Vincent finished seventh in both events, 800 meters (1:57.45) and 1,500 meters (4:01.87).
Also in the 1,500 meters, junior Jack Moore (10th; 4:03.65) and senior Kerby Depenbusch (12th; 4:04.04), for the first time this season, competed in the event.
The Wildcats will compete next at the Emporia State Relays Thursday (March 23) through Saturday (March 25) in Emporia, Kan. at the Zola Witten Track in the Francis G. Welch Stadium.
