Tommies Fend Off Wildcats, 2-1

Mar 22, 2023 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – St. Thomas held K-State to just four hits on the night to pick up a 2-1 win in the series finale on Wednesday at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Tommies (2-13) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead while the pitching staff left the Wildcats (14-8) hitless until the fifth inning. UST added its second run in the seventh before the Cats ended the shutout late in the ninth frame.

"Tonight was disappointing. You can't beat anyone if you don't get a hit with men on base," said Pete Hughes. "We walked nine times with a hit by pitch and stolen bases. We just couldn't get the hit."

"We left 12 men on base and when you do that, you get beat," said Hughes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
K-State had opportunities in eight innings but left 12 men on base including nine in scoring position as the Wildcats were limited to one run.

The Tommies recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the night cap before Dylan O'Connell flew out to deep right field to drive in a run.

Desginated hitter Kyan Lodice ended the no-hitter in the fifth frame as the Omaha, Neb., product singled into right. Nick Goodwin followed with a single to left center to move Lodice to third but a groundout to short ended the threat.

UST doubled its lead in the seventh frame with Brigs Richartz RBI groundout.

Roberto Pena and Brendan Jones each walked to lead off the final inning before a double steal moved runners to second and third. The Tommies shutdown the Cats in order preventing an extra innings situation.

Wildcats' starter Shay Hartis took the loss, allowing one run (one earned) on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts over two innings in his second start of the year.

Tucker Huhn picked up his first win of the season on the mound for the Tommies. The right-hander allowed two hits with a walk after relieving Owen Marsh in the fifth. Evan Esch was credited his first save, allowing one earned run on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts over three innings.
