K-State Earn Nine Top-Ten Finishes in Day 2 of Emporia State Relays

EMPORIA, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's track and field teams competed in the second day of the Emporia State Relays on Friday (March 24) at the Zola Witten Track in the Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.
The Wildcats ended the day with junior Cailan Steward winning the women's 5,000 meters and eight more top-10 finishes, including freshman Babs Koeman and Delaney Wright in the heptathlon.
Koeman and freshman Wright finished competition in their first heptathlon with todays last three events. Koeman finished in fourth place with 4,515 points, Wright in sixth place, 18 points shy of the top-5, with 4,317 points.
Koeman competed in all three events for the first time and saw her best finish in the javelin throw with a second place distance of 32.07m/105-2. She also finished fourth in both the long jump, with a distance of 5.45m/17-10.75, and in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.10.
Wright finished just shy of her long jump personal best with a third place jump of 5.55m/18-2.50. Competing for the first time in the 800 meters and javelin, she took second place on the track with a time of 2:21.83, and 12th in the javelin throw at 24.03m/78-10.
Steward won the 5,000 meters with a new personal best time of 17:21.50, her previous best being 17:38.62. Rounding out the second and third place finishes in the event were freshmen Cecilia Fisher (2nd; 17:29.88) and Katie Schwartzkopf (3rd; 18:07.19), both in their first attempt and Schwartzkopf's first meet of the season.
Junior Jack Moore (4th; 14:40.29) and senior Stephen Kielhofner (5th; 14:40.34) finished back-to-back in the men's 5,000 meters. Senior Ryan Derry competed in his first meet of the season with a fourth place finish in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:57.96.
Sophomore Prithviraj Chougule ran a new personal best in the 200 meter dash in 22.61 seconds.
K-State will compete in the final day of the Emporia State Relays on Saturday (March 25) with field events starting at 11:30 a.m. The track events start at 12 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter relay. Admission into Francis G. Welch stadium is $5.
