Explosive Second Half Sends K-State into Big 12 Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – With the aid of a 52-point second half and 12 steals in the game, Kansas State collected a 79-69 win over Texas Tech at Municipal Auditorium in the first round of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship. K-State has now advanced at least one round on 19 of the 26 championships.
K-State (17-15) was one off from its season-high of 53 points (vs. Northern Arizona, Nov. 25, 2022) for a second half with its 52-point output on Thursday night. The Wildcats shot 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the field in the second half which included its five connections from 3-point range. The Wildcats registered 29 points in the fourth quarter, tying the school record for a Big 12 Championship game for points in a fourth quarter.
The Wildcats finished the evening shooting 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field, including 50.0 percent or higher in the final three quarters. This was the fourth time this season K-State has shot 50.0 percent or better in a game.
Defensively, the Wildcats recorded 12 steals and blocked eight shots to hold Texas Tech (18-14) to 34.9 percent (22-of-63) shooting for the night. K-State's eight blocks tied for the second-most in a Big 12 Championship game in school history and equaled the season-high. The 12 steals tied for the third-highest total in program history in a Big 12 Championship game and marked the 14th game this season with 10 or more steals.
K-State was paced by a trio of players in double figures, led by senior Gabby Gregory's Big 12-leading 18th game this season with 20 or more points as she recorded 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 8-of-9 from the foul line and added seven rebounds. Gregory's 26 points are the fifth-most by a Wildcat in a Big 12 Championship game.
Gregory was joined by sophomore guard Serena Sundell with 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot.
Freshman Eliza Maupin came off the bench to chip in 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Thursday's first half featured seven lead changes and four ties, as the Wildcats trailed by six, 16-10, early in the second quarter. K-State captured its first lead of the evening with 3:38 remaining in the second stanza, as Maupin finished a fast break layup to give the Wildcats a 20-19 lead.
- Gregory put the Wildcats back in front, 23-21, with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:05 left in the second frame. A Jaelyn Glenn baseline floater put K-State back in front, 25-23, following a Texas Tech jumper. After a Lady Raider 3-pointer, Sundell finished a contested layup with nine seconds left to provide the Wildcats with a 27-26 lead at the half.
- The Wildcats shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the first half, including a 52.9 percent (9-of-17) effort from the field in the second quarter.
- K-State opened up a seven-point lead, 38-31, with a 9-0 run. Gregory started the rally with a jumper in the paint and was followed by a layup from Sundell. Sarah Shematsi then scored five straight points, including K-State's first 3-pointer of the night with 5:27 remaining in the third quarter.
- The Wildcats would take its advantage out to as high as 10, 50-40, as Gregory knocked down a 3-pointer before the end of the third quarter. K-State shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Raiders in the third, 23-16.
- In the fourth quarter, K-State would build an 11-point advantage, 53-42, as Sundell finished an old-fashioned three-point play with 9:19 remaining.
- Texas Tech used a 9-2 run to pull within two, 62-60, with 4:52 left in the fourth. The Wildcats answered with an 8-2 run highlighted by a corner three-pointer from Brylee Glenn with 2:06 remaining to give the Wildcats a 70-62 lead.
- In the final 1:11 of the game, K-State went 10-of-13 from the foul line which included a critical three-point play from Sarah Shematsi with 31 seconds left to douse any hope of a late Lady Raider comeback by pushing K-State into a 76-67 advantage.
