Apr 06, 2023 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the final test prior to the Big 12 Championship in two weeks, the Kansas State women's golf team will get an up-close look at its conference foes during the first ever Big 12 Women's Golf Match Play Tournament, Friday through Sunday, at the Ironwood and Acacia courses of Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The teams will conduct two rounds of Pool Play on Friday and one more on Saturday morning with five members of each team competing in each three-way matchup. After Pool Play, the top eight teams will move to the semifinal round for both the championship and consolation bracket on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning, the tournament will conclude with the consolation and championship finals. Bracket play will consist of twosomes using tee times.
"The team is excited about playing a match play event," head coach Kristi Knight said. "It is a fun, yet challenging, format. Keeping the ball in play and giving ourselves birdie opportunities will be important, as will each player staying in their process."
On Friday morning, K-State, the No. 9 seed, will face No. 3 Iowa State and No. 6 TCU. On Friday afternoon, the Wildcats will play against No. 2 Baylor and No. 4 Oklahoma, while on Saturday morning they will square off against No. 7 Kansas and No. 8 Oklahoma.
All six members of the squad will travel to Scottsdale to compete as the Wildcats will pick five members of the lineup to compete in a given round.
Seniors Haley Vargas and Manon Donche-Gay along with freshman Noa Van Beek led the Wildcats to an eighth-place finish the last time out at The Bruzzy. Vargas tied for 13th place at 7-over par 217, and the Lubbock, Texas native leads the Wildcats with a 72.88 stroke average.
Donche-Gay holds a 74.21 stroke average, just behind Van Beek who is at 74.06 thanks in part to an 11th place finish at the Westbrook Invitational earlier this spring.
The 2022-23 season is shaping up to be another great year for Big 12 women's golf as seven of the nine teams are currently ranked inside the Golfstat Top 50, led by four top-25 teams in No. 7 Texas, No. 13 Baylor, No. 17 Iowa State and No. 23 Oklahoma State.
A shotgun start will begin Pool Play on both Friday and Saturday morning, while tee times will be utilized on Friday afternoon and for all bracket play on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Live results will be available at Golfstat.com.
