Shockers Shutout Wildcats, 1-0
May 02, 2023 | Baseball
WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State picked up the season series victory over K-State as the Wildcats were shut out, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Tyler Field at Eck Stadium.
Â
"When you hold a really good offensive team to one run, you have to win," said Pete Hughes. "Especially when you have runners on first and third with no outs in three different innings."
Â
"We didn't score because we were bad in executing fundamental baseball. We had plenty of opportunities to win that game but couldn't execute."
Â
The Wildcats (28-18) had just four players who registered a hit against the Shockers' pitching staff led by Nick Goodwin. The Overland Park, Kan. native went 2-for-3 with a walk and reached in three straight plate appearances.
Â
"Time to get back to basics so we can be great at doing the little things down the stretch."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings, a hit by pitch fueled a two-out rally as the Shockers strung together back-to-back singles to plate the game's lone run in the bottom of the third.
Â
Junior reliever Blake Corsentino retired four straight batters including the side in the sixth to keep the game within one.
Â
Goodwin led off the seventh with his second consecutive hit out to opposite field until the junior shortstop advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. A walk landed two runners on base for the second time of the nightcap but the Cats ran into their second double play to end the threat.
Â
The Cats worked themselves out of a jam as the Shockers used a trio of walks to load the bases but a grounder to second baseman Brady Day ended the seventh.
Â
Raphael Pelletier shot his only hit of the game off the right field wall to start off the eighth before Roberto Pena walked to put runners on first and second. A failed bunt attempt stranded runners as the Shockers set down the Cats in order.
Â
Freshman Mason Buss (3-2) was credited the loss allowing the lone run with during his four-inning outing while Corsentino struck out a game-high three batters. Â
Â
