Red Raiders Hand Wildcats Four-Set Loss Thursday

Oct 03, 2024 | Volleyball

LUBBOCK, Texas – K-State's Ella Larkin recorded her 1,000th career dig and three players turned in a double-doubles, but Texas Tech handed the Wildcats a four-set defeat Thursday night at United Supermarkets Arena, 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-15.

Larkin, a senior from Maize, Kan., entered the night needing 11 digs to reach the milestone and tallied the magic number in the third set. She ended the night with a team-high 17 digs, totaling 189 in her first season at K-State. With her 817 total digs from LSU, Larkin has totaled 1,006 in her collegiate career.

Liz Gregorski produced career-high 21 kills – her third consecutive match with double digit kills – while adding 14 digs for her first career double-double. A native of Appleton, Wis., Gregorski hit .318 on the night and had 10 kills through Set 2 on her way to becoming just the second Wildcat to reach the 20-kill mark this season.

In its first Big 12 victory of the season, Texas Tech (9-6, 1-2 Big 12) hit .295 in racking up 50 kills while limiting K-State (3-9, 1-2 Big 12) to a .191 hitting percentage behind 10 blocks.

The Wildcats held a 59-50 edge in kill production with a 74-60 advantage in digs, but 30 attack errors proved to be the difference maker, as TTU out-blocked the Cats 10.0-4.0. Aliyah Carter finished with 16 kills while Jordyn Williams hit .333 in tallying eight kills.

Two players reached double figure kills for the Red Raiders with Mia Wesley (14) and Brynn Williams (13). Wesley added a match-high 19 digs to complete the double-double while Aliyah McDonald totaled five blocks (two solo, three assists).

FROM THE CATS
Jason Mansfield, K-State Head Coach
Overall thoughts…
"Congrats to Texas Tech. They are a veteran team, and they played like it with making very few errors tonight. I thought we had a good week of practice and prep for this match but making 10 attacking errors in the first set was not the start we wanted. The second set wasn't much better with nine, but I thought we battled. I was happy with the girl's response in the third set and thought we played really aggressive and clean volleyball. We unfortunately didn't carry that momentum into the fourth set and got outplayed. We have a very short turnaround to play a good Iowa State team, hopefully we learn and move on quickly to compete better on Saturday."

On Gregorki's career night…
"Really proud of how Liz has responded to playing six rotations these last two matches. She is aggressive and keeping the ball high to give herself a chance to score. This is why we recruited her and were so excited to have her in our program, I'm really happy for her that she's playing so well, she deserves it with how hard she has worked."
