MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head men's golf coach Grant Robbins announced Wednesday the signings of Oliver Toyer and Ville Virkkala, who will join the Wildcats in time for the 2025-26 season.
"We are very excited about the addition of Olly and Ville," Robbins said. "Both are tremendous players that can have an immediate impact on our program."
Toyer, who hails from Cambridgeshire, England, is a member of the English National Team and has been successful on the amateur circuit as he ranks 34th in the U18 European Amateur Rankings. He is coming off a win at the 2024 Faldo Series event at Luton Hoo in late October with a three-round total of 212. He also finished second in the 2023 English U18 Championship and third in the 2024 World Junior Golf Championship in Spain. Additionally, Toyer tied for seventh place at the 2024 Fairhaven Trophies in May with a 72-hole score of 291, while he advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2023 British Boys Amateur.
"Oliver is a fantastic player with tremendous upside," said Robbins. "The things that really stand out when watching him play are his competitiveness and ability to make a lot of birdies. He has gained some very valuable international experience the last couple of years, and he will be a great addition to our program."
A native of Espoo, Finland, Virkkala is a member of the Finnish National Team and is ranked 26th in the U21 European Amateur Rankings. He has a pair of top-10 showings in his last two events, which included a runner-up finish at the Timberwise Finnish Open – a professional event that is part of the Ecco Tour – as he put together a three-round total of 210. He also finished in sixth place at the Swiss Golf International Championship with a 54-hole score of 220 in early October. Additionally, Virkkala advanced to match play in the British Boys Amateur in both 2022 and 2023.
"Ville is a very talented player who has been a member of the Finnish National Team for a few years," commented Robbins. "Not only has he represented his country in some of the top international amateur events, he also has played well in numerous professional events. Ville is a very strong ball striker and brings a high level of athleticism and competitiveness from playing ice hockey at a very high level."
K-State returns to action February 10-11, when the Wildcats compete in the Hal Williams Collegiate at Magnolia Grove GC in Mobile, Alabama.
