Nov 14, 2024 | Cross Country

Five upperclassmen bring experience for a group of nine runners in their first NCAA postseason

The K-State men's and women's cross country teams will continue the postseason on Friday (Nov. 15) with the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill., hosted by Bradley University.

Back at Newman Golf Course for the second time this season, the women's 6k will start at 11 a.m. CT, with the men's 10k at 12 p.m. Both races will be streamed on ESPN+.

Other Big 12 Conference schools the Wildcats will face again in the Regional include Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma State.

The men will race in the 10k for the first time this season with just two runners on the team who experienced the meet last year, seniors Tommy Hazen (31:03.6) and Alex Gutierrez (33:47.5). Freshmen Jackson Esquibel and Lucas Holdren will continue their season racing in every meet of their first year.

For the women, sophomores Grace Meyer and Cecilia Fisher and senior Alexa Rios will bring NCAA postseason experience to a young team with three freshmen expected to race.

Starting the postseason, under first-year head coach Kate Bucknam, at the Big 12 Championship the women finished 10th with 319 points while the men placed 12th with 328 points.

Freshman Christine Jerono led the women's team in 51st place in a new personal best 6k time of 21:10.7, which is no. 21 in the K-State all-time top-25. Hazen continued to show his leadership by finishing 58th in 24:12.8, climbing three more spots in the men's all-time records at no. 9.

Last year at the Midwest Regional, the women's team finished in 5th place, the highest team finish since 2010, the men placed 24th. And for a third consecutive season the Wildcats earned an NCAA All-Region honor, awarded to the top-25 finishers, from Josphine Wanjiku in 18th place.

In 2022, Stephen Kielhofner finished 22nd, while Jaybe Shufelberger crossed the finish line in 19th place in 2021.
