Nov 04, 2024 | Rowing
K-State won gold in the Novice 8+ and bronze in Varsity 8+
The K-State women's rowing team concluded the fall season with the Jayhawk Jamboree at Burcham Park in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday (Nov. 2). The weekend was highlighted by a gold medal performance in the Novice 8+ and a bronze medal in the Varsity 8+.
Â
"The team did well this weekend. Watching us compete, it's clear we have a solid base with technique and fitness on the team," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "You can see the work our athletes have put in to get where we are. Our next big step is getting sharper and faster, really learning how to race down the course.
Â
"The team is in a good position at this time. We're looking forward to building from here."
Â
K-State competed in the Novice 8+, Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+ races. Competition included the hosting Jayhawks and the Creighton Bluejays.
Â
"Leading up to the competition, we had limited water time, but the team did a good job staying focused," Sweeney said. "You can see the experience we have on the team. We built even boats with the intention of getting in some good racing and making the most of another opportunity to get on the water."
Â
The Novice 8+ came in first, with a time of 15:22.9, 17 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher Kansas.Â
Â
In the Varsity 8+, the Cats claimed two top-5 spots in 3rd (K-State B; 14:29.5) and 4th (K-State A; 14:36.6) as well as a 7th place finish (K-State C; 15:13.4).Â
Â
With four boats competing in the Varsity 4+ race, K-State finished back-to-back starting in 6th place (K-State A; 16:33.2), (K-State C; 16:34.1), (K-State B; 17:00.1) and (K-State D; 17:25.9).Â
Â
"We would like to thank Carrie Cook-Callen and her staff for hosting this weekend," Sweeney said. "We appreciate everything they did to make Saturday possible."
Â
With the end of fall racing, the Wildcats continue to prepare for the 2025 spring season set to start in March.Â
Â
"As we're gearing up for winter training, the team should be proud of what they have accomplished this fall," Sweeney said. "We're looking forward to the spring and seeing what the team can accomplish during racing season."
