Wildcats Fall in Four at No. 11 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Two Wildcats recorded double-doubles in K-State's four-set loss against 11th-ranked Arizona State at Desert Financial Arena Friday night – 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25.
ASU (24-2, 12-1 Big 12), now the Big 12 leader in the league standings, had two players reach double-digit kills with Roberta Rabelo (13) and Geli Cyr (12).
The Sun Devils forced 33 errors and totaled 15.0 blocks in suppressing the K-State (9-12, 7-5 Big 12) offense, as Claire Jeter led both squads with nine blocks. K-State managed 11.0 blocks, paced by Meg Brown with five.
Aliyah Carter eclipsed the 20-kill mark for the sixth time this season, as the outside hitter led all players with 22 kills to go along with 12 digs for her 31st career double-double. Shaylee Myers was next with 10 kills while Aniya Clinton added nine.
Izzi Szulczewski dished out a match-high 46 assists. The senior setter added 10 digs for her team-leading 11th double-double of the season, while Ella Larkin led with 20 digs followed by Molly Ramsey (10) and Symone Sims (10).
Carter is third all-time with 23 matches with 20 or more kills in her career and is three 20-kill matches from tying K-State Hall of Fame Dawn Cady.
Friday's match marks the first meeting between the two schools as Big 12 foes.
The Wildcats return to Morgan Family Arena for a pair of top 25 matches, as K-State faces No. 17 Baylor (16-6, 8-3 Big 12) on November 13 before taking on No. 18 TCU (17-5, 9-3 Big 12) on November 15. Both matches are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and can be seen on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

"Loved the fight we showed tonight, but it feels like a missed opportunity. Playing the #11 team in the country that tightly on the road shows we can compete with anyone; that's the confidence we need to keep building. I felt like we were ready from the first point, so I'm proud of our focus, and the girls executed well on the scouting report. Now, we need to regroup for a tough week ahead at home against two strong teams."

Set One – #11 Arizona State 25, K-State 22
The two squads went point-for-point until ASU broke away with a three-point lead. K-State brought the game within one, 15-14, with a kill from Carter before a block assist from Clinton and Schmidt evened the score. Utilizing a 7-3 scoring run, ASU managed to break out with a four-point lead and held on to capture the initial set.
K-State was held to a -.031 hitting percentage with 12 errors, while the defense out-blocked ASU 4.0-2.0 and a 12-8 edge in dig production. The Sun Devils committed six service errors in the first set.
Set Two – K-State 25, #11 Arizona State 21
Tied 7-7, Carter hammered down her eighth kill of the match to ignite a 3-1 scoring run. K-State jumped out to a three-point lead,18-15, with back-to-back kills from Schmidt and Clinton to force a timeout from ASU.
ASU cut the lead to 20-19 but was answered with a 5-2 closing run led by three straight kills from Brown, Myers, and Carter with Myers' third kill of the night delivering the final blow. The Cats hit at a match-leading .317 clip in the second (18 kills, 5 errors), led by six kills from Clinton.
Set Three – #11 Arizona State 25, K-State 20
K-State trailed 7-4 before compiling a 9-1 scoring run to take a 13-8 lead, highlighted by five kills from Myers.
A call was overturned in favor of the Sun Devils, tying the score at 15-all before a service ace handed ASU its second lead of the set. With the help of a 9-1 scoring run, the Sun Devils picked up the Set 3 win.
ASU's defense used four blocks to hold K-State to a .108 hitting efficiency.
Set Four – #11 Arizona State 25, K-State 23
ASU scored four straight points to go ahead 8-5 and stretched its lead to five, 13-8, to force a timeout from K-State.
The Cats clawed their way back to a one-point deficit, 20-19, as Clinton connected on a pass from Szulczewski before the tying the set with Carter's 20th kill.
K-State took the lead with a double block by Brown and Szulczewski but was immediately responded with three straight points from ASU to help put the match away. ASU's six blocks in Set 4 proved to be the difference maker.
