Boerema Strikes Out 11, No. 24 Wildcats Win Series Sunday
Feb 25, 2024 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the first rubber match of the season, eleven strikeouts from Owen Boerema led No. 24 K-State to a 5-4 victory over Holy Cross at Tointon Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Boerema turned in a season-high 11 strikeouts, as the lefty limited the Crusaders (2-4) to two earned runs in his 5 2/3 inning start. The graduate student from Litchfield, Minn., scattered four hits in earning his first win of the season.
"We got a good start, and good starting pitching means everything," K-State head coach Pete Hughes said. "Owen allowed our offense to settle in a little bit and build a lead, which was a positive from today and what we needed."
Boerema's 5 2/3 innings marked a season-high, as he held Holy Cross to one run over the first four frames, including striking out the side in the fourth.
Jackson Wentworth took over for Boerema in the sixth and closed the game for K-State (4-3), surrendering two hits and two runs (one earned) on his way to earning his second career save.
"Jackson was a calming presence when he came in. He threw a lot of strikes and didn't hurt himself," said Hughes.
"When you get good pitching, you have a chance."
Seven different Wildcats registered a hit in the game, with all five runs coming in the first four innings. Danniel Rivera went 3-for-3 at the plate while Jayden Lobliner drove in a game-high three RBI.
"I do wish our team played with a little more urgency in the second half of that game. To win at our level and go where we want to go, you have to extend leads and pull away from people."
THE RUNDOWN
Holy Cross opened scoring in the second frame with a solo shot by second baseman Alex Sandell.
Leadoff Chuck Ingram doubled into right center to lead off for the Cats before advancing to third on a deep fly ball by designated hitter Mason Schwalbach. K-State leveled the score in the next at bat with an RBI single from Lobliner.
The Wildcats plated three runs in the third to take their first lead of the series. With two outs, Schwalbach singled into right to score Ingram from second until Lobliner followed up with a no-doubter out to the left field parking lot to hand K-State the 4-1 lead.
A single to the infield by preseason All-American Kaelen Culpepper would drive in the final run for K-State.
