Wildcats Begin Spring Season at Hal Williams Collegiate
Feb 09, 2024 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team opens its spring slate in a familiar environment as the Wildcats travel to Mobile, Alabama, to take part in the Hal Williams Collegiate, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-71, 7,178-yard RTJ Magnolia Grove Golf Club.
Â
This is the third-straight year that the Wildcats will open the spring at Magnolia Grove. Last season, K-State finished in third place at 13-under par 839, while they finished in fourth place in 2022 at 5-under par 859.
Â
"We are really excited to get the spring season started in Mobile," 10th-year head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a golf course in which we are very familiar, and one that if you drive it well, you should have a lot of birdie opportunities. Depending on the conditions, the scoring is generally pretty low there, so it will be important for us to take advantage of those opportunities and not give shots away. I feel like we've had some good practices over the last couple of weeks, and I know the guys are ready to go."
Â
K-State, which averaged 289.67 strokes per round as a team in the fall, will send the lineup of juniors Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason, senior Luke O'Neill, junior JP Roller and sophomore Alex Lindstrom. It marks the second time this season the Wildcats will use this lineup as they carded a 3-under par 861 to finish eighth out of 20 teams at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in September. Additionally, junior Ian McCrary will compete in Mobile as an individual.
Â
Schultz led the Wildcats during the fall with a 70.44 stroke average to go along with two top-five finishes and another showing in the top 20. He was followed closely in stroke average by O'Neill at 71.00 and Mason at 71.56. Lindstrom produced the best placing of the season for K-State as he finished second in the season-opening Wildcat Invitational.
Â
Roller closed out the fall by tying for 10th place at the Steelwood Intercollegiate with a 1-under par 215 score. McCrary is competing in his second event this season as he tied for 27th at the Wildcat Invitational at 4-over par 220.
Â
Kansas State is part of a 14-team field in Mobile that also includes Davidson, No. 20 Illinois, Kent State, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, No. 33 LSU, Memphis, Oral Roberts, Seton Hall, host-school South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State and No. 56 VCU.
Â
The Hal Williams Collegiate tees off on Monday at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start to the first 36 holes, while Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
