K-State’s #92 Suarez Defeats Ranked Opponent in 4-3 Loss to Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The K-State women's tennis team fell just short of a win on Friday (Feb. 9) with a 4-3 lost in the first meeting against Alabama at the Alabama Tennis Facility.
 
K-State (4-2) split the singles matches with Alabama (4-1) but the Wildcats fell short in the doubles matches, losing by just a point.
 
Freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and senior Manami Ukita dropped the first doubles match, 6-3, to Ola Pitak and Loudmilla Bencheikh in the no. 2 spot. Similarly, freshman Charlotte Keitel and sophomore Vanesa Suarez, in their first match as a duo, were defeated by Klara Milicevic and Anne Marie Hiser in the no. 3 position, 6-3.
 
Junior Veronika Kulhava and Tereza Polakova went unfinished in their fourth straight doubles match, 4-5, against Petra Sedlackova and Anna Parkhomenko in the no. 1 spot.
 
Number 92 ranked Suarez defeated #50 Sedlackova in three sets in the no. 1 position. After dropping the first set she battled back for the win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. It is her second ranked win of the spring, boosting her overall record versus ranked opponents, 7-4.
 
Keitel and Chogsomjav were also successful in three set matches. Keitel faced Pitak, starting off strong but encountering a high scoring second set. She kept the momentum to be victorious 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the no. 4 spot.
 
Chogsomjav claimed her first three set victory in the no. 5 position. Competing against Parkhomenko, she stumbled in the first set but battled back, even conquering a high scoring third set, winning 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
 
Alabama's #26 ranked Bencheikh started off slow against Ukita, dropping the first set in the no. 2 spot. The two then battled in a high scoring third set but Ukita could not keep the momentum going, losing 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
 
Two Wildcats were defeated in straight sets-- Kulhava and sophomore Maria Santos.
 
Kulhava fell short to Hiser, 6-3, 6-2, in the no. 4 position. Santos suffered her first loss of the spring, facing a high scoring first set in the no. 6 spot against Milicevic, but she could not hang on, losing 7-5, 6-2.
 
K-State will compete again in Tuscaloosa on Saturday (Feb. 10) in a neutral site match against Indiana (4-3) at 10 a.m. CT.
