ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Kansas State men's golf team could never gain momentum throughout The Johnnie-O at Sea Island, as the Wildcats tied for 13th place at 10-over par 874 following Tuesday's final round of 2-over par 290 at the par-72, 7,060-yard Plantation Course of Sea Island Golf Club.
"We just couldn't get anything going, and we kept putting ourselves in positions that made it difficult to score," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It was a disappointing week, but it's something we will learn from. We have some time now before our next event, so it will be a good opportunity for us to take a good hard look at where we are, work hard on the areas we need to get better at and make a strong push toward the postseason."
The Wildcats did see a solid 54-hole score of 1-under par 212 put together by junior Ian McCrary, who played in a separate individual tournament at the par-71 Sea Palms Golf Club. The Overland Park, Kansas, native, who went 1-over par 72 on Tuesday, placed fifth as he earned his first top-five finish as a Wildcat.
Senior Luke O'Neill gave himself some positive energy to end The Johnnie-O as he carded a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday, his first under-par final round of the spring. O'Neill, a product of Connemara, Ireland, moved 20 spots up the leaderboard on the final day into a tie for 53rd place at 5-over par 221.
K-State was led during the event by junior Cooper Schultz, who tied for 38th place at 2-over par 218 after carding a 1-over par 73 in the final round. A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz saw a two-tournament streak of under-par golf come to an end.
Junior Nicklaus Mason tied with O'Neill for 53rd place after a final round of even-par 72. O'Neill and Mason finished one stroke ahead of junior JP Roller, who tied for 58th place at 6-over par 225 following a final-round score of 3-over par 75. Sophomore Alex Lindstrom tied for 67th place at 9-over par 225.
Notre Dame took home the team title at 32-under par 832, 10 shots ahead of second-place Texas. Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski and Michigan State's Ashton McCulloch finished in a tie atop the individual leaderboard at 12-under par 204.
Next action for Kansas State comes April 8-9, as the Wildcats compete in the Tiger Intercollegiate held at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.
