Wildcats Return to Action at Tiger Intercollegiate
Apr 05, 2024 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off nearly a month's worth of preparation, the Kansas State men's golf team returns to competition as the Wildcats participate in the Tiger Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.
This is an event where the Wildcats have historically had success as they finished in second place in 2018, 2019 and 2021, while they recorded a third-place finish last season after carding a 36-under par 828, tied for the fifth lowest 54-hole score in school history. Individually, the Wildcats have posted 11 top-10 showings over their last four events at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
"We are looking forward to competing at Missouri this weekend," said head coach Grant Robbins, whose team is looking to rebound after a tie for 13th place last time out at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island. "Old Hawthorne is a course we are somewhat familiar with, and we've had some success there in the past. There is a great mix of holes there – including a few that are really good risk/reward opportunities – and the par 3's are pretty difficult. The key is to play those par 3's well and take advantage of those birdie opportunities when we get them. We've had a good couple of weeks of practice, so we look forward to having a great week."
For the fifth time in as many events this spring, Kansas State will use the scoring lineup of juniors Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason, senior Luke O'Neill, junior JP Roller and sophomore Alex Lindstrom, while junior Ian McCrary will compete as an individual.
Schultz, who leads the team with a 70.62 stroke average, tied for 10th last year at Old Hawthorne with a score of 9-under par 207. A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz has posted three top-10 finishes this season, including two in the top-five as he tied for third at the Wildcat Invitational in September and tied for fourth at the Steelwood Intercollegiate in October.
Mason and O'Neill are right behind Schultz in terms of stroke average at 71.14 and 71.71, respectively. O'Neill competed as an individual last year in Columbia, and he tied for sixth place at 11-under par 205, a performance that sparked the rest of his junior season as he went on to compete in the NCAA Championship.
Joining K-State at The Club at Old Hawthorne are Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, Iowa State, Lindenwood, Lipscomb, Louisiana Monroe, Minnesota, host-school Missouri, Rutgers, San Francisco, South Carolina, South Dakota State, Stetson, Saint Mary's, UAB and Wyoming.
An 8 a.m. shotgun start will begin play both days with the first two rounds being contested on Monday and the final round set for Tuesday.
