K-State continues the weekend against TCU on Sunday

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team fought to the last match against Baylor on Friday afternoon (March 15) in a 4-3 loss at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

After losing the doubles point, K-State (7-6, 1-4 Big 12) tied up the score with three singles wins, the last match coming down to senior Manami Ukita, but #26 Baylor (13-5, 5-0 Big 12) walked away keeping an undefeated conference record.

With the match tied at 3 points apiece, Ukita was set to finish the second set down 4-1 to Zuzanna Kubacha. After losing the first set in a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker, she kept fighting, forcing another high scoring set. Ukita went toe-to-toe with Kubacha before falling short in a similar score of 7-6 (8-6).

To start the match, junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Tereza Polakova claimed the first doubles win 6-1 over Kubacha and Sierra Berry in the no. 1 spot. It was the duo's first conference doubles victory since facing Kansas on March 3.

Freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Ukita fell to Isabella Harvison and Liubov Kostenko in the no. 3 position, 6-1. As the tiebreaker match, sophomore Maria Santos and Vanesa Suarez could not keep the momentum, losing 6-2 in the no. 3 spot.

Polakova won the first singles match of the day, defeating Zuzanna Frankowska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, in the no. 6 position.

Freshman Charlotte Keitel claimed a victory after a first tiebreaker over Kostenko. In the no. 3 spot, Keitel won the first set tiebreaker before clinching the win, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. She won her third straight match, also 3-0 in the no. 3 spot.

Chogsomjav was the third Wildcats win of the day, defeating Tuhten 6-4, 6-4 in the no. 5 position.

In a battle of ranked opponents, #105 Suarez fell to #101 Kadleckova in the no. 1 spot. After dropping the first set, Suarez fought back in a high scoring second set but fell short, 6-1, 7-5. Kulhava was also defeated, 6-4, 6-2, in the no. 2 position to Harvison.

The Wildcats continue the weekend hosting #65 TCU (7-4, 3-2 Big 12) on Sunday (March 17) at 12 p.m. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On the close finish with Baylor...
"Credit to Baylor today. I mean, there's a reason why they have the ranking they do, they've won a lot of tough matches, similar to this moment. I don't think we've been in a three all final match scenario too often with this team. Obviously, I'm happy with how hard we fought and just the effort that we're putting in. I know we're getting close to kind of knocking down that door and kind of getting over this hurdle, like beating some of these ranked teams, and so we just have to keep responding and hopefully we come through eventually."

On facing #65 TCU on Sunday...
"I mean, there's no easy ones, you know, once we're in conference play. I'm not sure what TCU and Oklahoma State are doing but I know they're [TCU] gonna come in ready and they're gonna fight hard. So I know if we just come out here and protect our home and play to to this level, and last week at Texas Tech, then we're going to be in every match."
