Cats Rally, Score Four Unanswered to Clinch Big 12 Series
Mar 24, 2024 | Baseball
"Our team is tough and they're resilient," said head coach Pete Hughes, who earned his 800th career win the night prior. "They never give up and they seem to do it every game with winning results lately."
K-State (16-6, 4-1 Big 12) battled back in its eighth come-from-behind win of the season, as the Wildcats wiped away a three-run deficit with four unanswered runs in the eighth and handed Big 12 newcomer Houston (14-8, 4-4 Big 12) its second conference series loss.
"Tonight was a great example of playing the next play and never looking at the score board. We caught some breaks for sure but had some guys have some big moments. Big hits from Chuck Ingram and Kyan Lodice helped us close the gap and take the lead, and freshman Blake Dean got the last seven outs in a high-leverage game. This is what winning baseball looks like to me," Hughes said.
Sophomore Blake Dean picked up his first collegiate victory after retiring seven of nine batters he faced in the final 2 1/3 innings (1-2). The freshman right-hander surrendered just one hit with a walk and struck out two.

Seven different Wildcats produced a hit in the win, while four drove in a run. Ingram and Brendan Jones each turned in two-hit days, with Ingram drove in the game-winning run.
Justin Murray (0-2) was credited with the loss, after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in his 1 2/3 innings of work.
THE RUNDOWN
K-State sent six to the plate in the opening frame and scored two, led by an RBI double down the right field line by Kaelen Culpepper.
The Cougars snapped Jacob Frost's no-hit bid in the fifth with a two-run single to even the score at 2-all.
Mason Buss relieved Frost and inherited a first and third situation before the Cougars used a two-run single to take the lead.
Trailing 5-2, Danniel Rivera drove in Brady Day from second until K-State took advantage of a costly error made by the first baseman that plated the tying run.
Pinch hitter Kyan Lodice kept the Cats alive with a single into right field to bring back the top of the order where Ingram laced his second hit of the night into center to drive in the go-ahead run.
