Wanjiku Wins WashU 5000 Meters, Wildcats with Top-Three Finishes in Wichita

Wildcats finished top-three and earned personal bests at WSU

WICHITA, Kan. – The K-State track and field teams competed on day one of the Shock Spring Invitational on Friday (March 29) at Cessna Stadium hosted by Wichita State. Distance runners also finished up WashU Distance Carnival competition in the 5,000 meter races in St. Louis, Mo.
 
On Thursday (March 28) freshman Josphine Wanjiku won the women's 5,000 race at Bushyhead Track with a new facility record time of 16:24.73. Running in the event for the first time, she jumps up to no. 5 in the K-State all-time top-10.
 
In Wichita, competing in seven of the day's events, K-State finished in the top-three nine times, highlighted by three women claiming first place.
 
Sophomore Saydee Tanking won the women's javelin throw with a new personal best of over eight feet at 45.80m/150-3. As runner-up, senior Maddie Righter also threw a new best at 43.70m/143-4, while freshman Brooklyn Jones competed in her first collegiate meet, finishing 8th with a throw of 38.22m/125-5.
 
In the women's hammer throw, junior Monique Hardy won the event with a throw of 61.31m/201-2. Also, in the top-three was senior Charlotte Cattermole-Williams (3rd; 57.65m/189-2), while senior Jasmine Greer (5th; 50.17m/164-7) threw a new best by seven feet.
 
On the track, in the women's 1,500 meters, senior Hannah Stewart (1st; 4:32.24) and sophomores Grace Meyer (2nd; 4:34.15) and Cecilia Fisher (3rd; 4:38.00) claimed the top-three spots in the race.
 
Five men ran in the 1,500 meters, with junior Alex Gutierrez finishing runner-up in 3:52.42 and senior Kyle Johnston running a new personal best in 3:53.38 in 3rd place.
 
Three more Wildcats competed in St. Louis on Thursday and Friday-- senior Cailan Steward finished 33rd in 17:31.9. In the men's race, senior Kerby Depenbusch finished top-50 in 43rd place with a time of 14:56.96, freshman Devin Chappel finished his first collegiate track meet in 15:07.0, placing 56th out of 278 runners.
 
Day two of competition in Wichita kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, pole vault and high jump. The women's 4x100 relay will start the track events at 2:00 p.m.
