K-State Drops Saturday’s Rubber Game to Texas
Mar 30, 2024 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State closed a four-run deficit to one in the eighth inning, but Texas answered with a pair of solo shots to help deal the Wildcats their first series loss of the season with a 6-3 decision Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.
"Missed opportunity, that's how you sum up today," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Missed opportunities and we played good enough to lose. Giving up eight free bases, we don't play defense, we don't situationally hit, then you get beat. You can out-hit them eleven to six and still get beat. That's the storyline of the game."
K-State (18-8, 6-3 Big 12) held an 11-6 advantage in hits led by three hits apiece from Chuck Ingram and Brendan Jones. The duo each went 3-for-5 at the plate with RBIs coming in from Ingram, Kaelen Culpepper, and David Bishop.
"We couldn't take advantage of the phenomenal atmosphere, my apologies to this community for what they saw today. Please keep coming out, this is a good group of kids and it's a really good team, and we will play better for you. The whole weekend, the help and support was true K-State fan fashion, it was fun to be a part of."
Max Grubbs (4-0) held the Cats to just one run through his six-inning start, allowing six hits with five strikeouts to pick up the victory while Andre Duplantier II was awarded the save, as the Longhorns (17-11, 6-3 Big 12) utilized five pitchers in the win.
Owen Boerema (2-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Tyson Neighbors threw a season-high three innings with three strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
Texas threatened to jump on the board in the opening frame with a pair of walks and hit by pitch, but Boerema forced a shallow ball to center to get out of the bases jammed situation.
After two scoreless innings, the Longhorns jumped on the board with a two-run double by Kimble Schuessler before doubling the lead in the fourth.
K-State capitalized on a fielding error in the sixth that led to Culpepper's triple down the right field line to get the Cats on the board, 4-1.
Neighbors relieved Boerema in the seventh where the junior right-hander retired three straight, including his first strikeout at home this season.
In the bottom of the inning, Ingram and Jones each laced a two-out single into right center before Day was walked on four straight pitches to load the bases. The Longhorns made a lengthy substitution that took momentum away from the Cats dugout and struck out the final batter to end the threat.
K-State closed the gap in the eighth, as Kyan Lodice singled into center and Raphael Pelletier walked to make it first and second. David Bishop lined a shot into right center to score Lodice and move runners to first and third, leading Texas to make their fourth call to the pen.
Ingram won the at bat against Duplantier, driving in Pelletier with his ninth hit of the series and bringing the game within one, 4-3.
With runners on first and third, Longhorns' centerfielder made the basket catch to preserve the lead. Texas added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth with solo shots by Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell.
