K-State Looks to Defend Title at The Johnnie-O

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a fourth-place finish last week at the Colleton River Collegiate, the Kansas State men's golf team returns to the southeast looking to defend its title at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island, Monday and Tuesday, held at the par-72, 7,060-yard Plantation Course of Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The Wildcats won last year's event at 1-under par 839, seven shots clear of a tie for second place between Cincinnati and Ohio State. However, the 2023 edition was played on the Seaside Course, forcing K-State to make an adjustment to a shorter track.
"We have a quick turnaround this week going back to Sea Island," head coach Grant Robbins said. "This is a place where we have had some success in the past, but the Plantation Course is a little bit different. It is shorter but the greens are small, and it's a place where you have to leave your approach shots in the right spots in order to score well. I've been very pleased with our ballstriking the last couple of tournaments. We just have to keep improving on all aspects of our game, especially on and around the greens."
K-State is coming off a season-best score against par, carding a 22-under 842 to earn its third straight top-five showing and fourth of the season, as the Wildcats moved up two spots to No. 59 in the national rankings.
For a fourth-straight event this spring, K-State will utilize the scoring lineup of juniors Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason, senior Luke O'Neill, junior JP Roller and sophomore Alex Lindstrom. Additionally, junior Ian McCrary will compete in a separate individual tournament held at the par-71, 6,822-yard Sea Palms Golf Club.
Schultz, a native of Andover, Kansas, leads the Wildcats with a 70.28 stroke average this season, including a 69.00 average over his last two tournaments that features three rounds of 67 and a round of 69. He is coming off a tie for seventh place at the Colleton River Collegiate, which came on the heels of a tie for 11th at The Prestige two weeks prior.
A product of Shawnee, Kansas, Mason is right behind Schultz with a 70.72 stroke average this season thanks to a pair of top-15 showings in each of the last two events. Over his last two outings, Mason is averaging 69.33 strokes per round, recording a round of 67 and two rounds of 69.
Roller enters the Johnnie-O at Sea Island with momentum after carding a 3-under par 69 during the final round of the Colleton River Collegiate, helping the Texas Tech transfer finish with his best score against par, a 1-under 215.
Kansas State will be joined on the Plantation Course by Augusta, Cincinnati, No. 16 Illinois, No. 55 Kansas, Marquette, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, No. 41 Notre Dame, Penn State, host-school Rutgers, No. 19 Texas and No. 46 UNC Greensboro.
A shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (ET) on Monday morning begins the Johnnie-O at Sea Island with continuous play into the second round that afternoon. Tee times will begin Tuesday's final round starting at 8 a.m. (ET). Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
