WEST POINT, Miss. – The Kansas State men's golf team was unable to keep the momentum it created over the first 36 holes of the Mossy Oak Collegiate, as the Wildcats carded a 1-over par 289 during Tuesday's final round to finish in sixth place at the par-72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Course.
The Wildcats, who had the fifth-best round of the day, concluded the event with a 54-hole score of 4-under par 860 on the bunched-up leaderboard. K-State finished a shot back of fifth-place Liberty, two shots behind fourth-place and host-school Mississippi State and four shots shy of third-place Cincinnati.
Kansas State was one of six teams in the 14-team field to shoot under par for the tournament, which represented the Wildcats' first under-par event since the Colleton River Collegiate in early March.
The Wildcats received a top-10 showing from junior Cooper Schultz, who tied for seventh place at 5-under par 211 thanks to a final-round score of 1-under par 71, his third straight under-par round. Schultz was at 3-under par and bogey free through 13 holes on Tuesday before hitting a stretch of three-straight bogeys from Nos. 14-16. He was able to right the ship with a birdie on No. 17 and a par to close out the event.
A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz produced his team-leading fourth top-10 finish this season, while it was his best finish since also tying for seventh at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Junior Nicklaus Mason posted a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole score of 3-under par 213, tying for 15th place. It was his fifth top-20 showing of the season, a new career best.
The Wildcats' biggest riser on the leaderboard during the final round was sophomore Alex Lindstrom, who jumped 12 spots to tie for 35th place at 3-over par 219 thanks to an even-par round.
Junior JP Roller, who carded a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday, tied for 39th place at 4-over par 220, one shot ahead of senior Luke O'Neill, who tied for 44th place. O'Neill also produced a substantial rise on the leaderboard in the final round, moving up eight spots after posting a 1-over par 73.
Auburn, which held a 23-shot lead entering the final 18 holes, extended its margin en route to a 34-stroke victory at 46-under par 818. The Tigers had each of the top five players on the individual leaderboard, including two players that tied for medalist honors in Brendan Valdes and J.M. Butler at 12-under par 204.
Next action for Kansas State comes next Monday through Wednesday when the Wildcats compete in the 2024 Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
