MANHATTAN, Kan. – Looking to make a final push toward the postseason, the Kansas State men's golf team takes on its conference brethren in the 2024 Big 12 Championship, Monday through Wednesday, at the par-72, 7,434-yard Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
The 72-hole event will feature two rounds on Monday and single rounds on both Tuesday and Wednesday. K-State begins play on Monday from the first tee at 8:20 a.m. and will be paired with Houston and West Virginia. The third and fourth rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday will begin with tee times based on placing at 8 a.m., and the final round will be shown live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
The Big 12 is once again one of the top conferences in collegiate men's golf as 10 of the 14 teams rank in the top 70 in the nation, including No. 69 Kansas State. Other teams in the top 70 include No. 12 Texas Tech, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 17 Texas, No. 27 Oklahoma State, No. 35 Baylor, No. 41 BYU, No. 49 Houston, No. 65 West Virginia and No. 70 Kansas.
"We are excited to get down to Whispering Pines for the Big 12 Championship," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The golf course is about as good as it gets, and the entire experience of competing in a Big 12 Championship is second to none. The course is a tremendous test, and you have to be sharp in every aspect of your game. I have been very pleased with our preparation and am really looking forward to seeing us compete against the best teams in the country."
Six members of the squad – senior Luke O'Neill, juniors Nicklaus Mason, Ian McCrary, JP Roller and Cooper Schultz, as well as sophomore Alex Lindstrom – will travel to Whispering Pines as five members will compete in each round with substitutions allowed between rounds.
Schultz leads the team with a 70.78 scoring average, which currently ranks third in school history, and he is coming off an impressive showing at the Mossy Oak Collegiate when he tied for seventh place at 5-under par 211.
A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz tied for 12th in last year's Big 12 Championship with a 72-hole score of 8-over par 288 at the par-70 Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Mason, who ranks second on the team with a 71.30 scoring average, also looks to ride the momentum of an under-par score last week in Mississippi when he tied for 15th place at 3-under par 213. The Shawnee, Kansas, native enters the championship ranked fifth in school history in single-season scoring average, while his career average of 72.34 across his 90 rounds ranks third in K-State history.
A senior from Connemara, Ireland, O'Neill holds a career scoring average of 72.61 over his 119 rounds to currently rank fourth in school history. During last year's Big 12 Championship, O'Neill tied for 15th at 9-over par 289.
