K-State Travel to Tennessee for SIRA Championship

Racing on Saturday consists of preliminary trials and semifinal heats
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team heads to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) regatta this weekend (April 20-21) at Melton Hill Lake.

Saturday racing will comprise of preliminary timed trials in the morning where boats will compete for spots in the afternoon semifinal heats. On Sunday, qualifying boats will race in the 'A' finals. K-State will face competition including Louisville and Jacksonville University. The 'Cats previously raced Jacksonville at the Sunshine State Invitational.

"We're looking forward to having more opportunities to come down the line and continue practicing our race plan," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "The team has done a good job pushing their strength and fitness all year. At this point in the season, our main focus is finessing the technique and continuing to make the most of any water time we get."

This will be the third consecutive year the Wildcats race in the SIRA regatta since the condensed COVID season. Last season the team earned three gold medals from in 1v8+, 2v8+ and 3v8+/ 3N8+ events. Â The 1v4+ also claimed a silver medal.

This will be the fourth consecutive weekend of racing for the Cats. Last weekend the team faced Iowa and Minnesota in a Double Duel in Kansas City, Kan. Prior to that, the team swept Creighton in all six races in Omaha, Neb. on April 6.

K-State also competed at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. Â where the 1v4+ qualified for the 'A' final after winning their semifinal. The 3v8+ also competed in the 'A' final and walked away with a bronze medal.

The team also opened the season at the Hornet Invitational, where the 'Cats claimed seven first place finishes competing against Sac State, UC San Diego and St. Mary's.

"Every year, this regatta continues to be an opportunity for the team to get consistent water time and race on a solid course," Sweeney said. "As we are finalizing lineups, and continuing to make forward progress, the team is in a good position to finish the season strong and make the most of the work they have done this season."
