Wildcats won nine events with many others with personal bests

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State track and field teams competed in the Ward Haylett Invitational on Friday (April 26) at R.V. Christian Track. Other competing teams included Wichita State, Missouri State, Missouri and Cloud County.
 
With 20 mph winds south to southwest, and gusts over 35 mph, the Wildcats continued to record personal bests and multiple top-three performances.
 
K-State claimed nine first place finishes, six in field events and three on the track. On Thursday afternoon in Wichita, Kan., the men's and women's hammer throw was contested at Cessna Stadium, where junior Monique Hardy claimed the first victory of the meet with a throw of 60.48m/198-5.
 
Starting competition on Friday, two Wildcats claimed first place in the men's and women's discus throw. Sophomore Tamaiah Koonce recorded her first collegiate win with a new personal best of five feet at 56.14m/184-2. In the men's event, senior Andrew White won with a throw of 58.27m/191-2. As runner-up, sophomore Nate Collier finished with a distance of 58.05m/190-5, his furthest throw by three feet.
 
Collier also competed in the shot put with a 3rd place throw of 16.62m/54-6.50, his second new best of the day.
 
Senior Jaycee Schroeder won the women's shot put with a throw of 16.34m/53-7.50, adding an inch to her previous best. Senior Devon Richardson claimed his second triple jump win of the season with a distance of 15.50m/50-10.25, and a wind aide of 2.7.
 
Senior Jesse Pinkley won the men's pole vault by clearing a height of 4.86m/15-11.25 while senior Michael Hermes (4th; 4.26m/13-11.75) recorded a new personal best. Sophomore Claire Bybee finished 3rd in the women's event with a height of 3.76m/12-4.
 
Senior Jaimie Omalla competed in two sprints, winning the 200 meter dash in 21.21 seconds, and recorded his new fastest time in the 100 meter dash in 10.51 seconds. K-State also won the men's 400 meters, freshman Nen Matlock taking first place in his fastest time of 47.08 seconds.
 
In the women's 1,500 meters, the Wildcats claimed the top-three spots with freshman Josphine Wanjiku (1st; 4:28.78), senior Hannah Stewart (2nd; 4:30.23) and sophomore Grace Meyer (3rd; 4:30.69).
 
In the men's high jump, sophomore Aaron Antoine and junior Marcus Gelpi both tied for 2nd, clearing a height of 2.15m/7-0.75. In the women's event, junior Madelyn McCabe claimed runner-up at 1.70m/5-7, while junior Vanessa Mercera finished 3rd with a height of 1.65m/5-5. Mercera took 3rd place again later in the afternoon in the 200 meters with a new time of 24.47 seconds.
 
More K-State distance runners claimed top spots throughout the afternoon, in the women's 5,000 meters, senior Cailan Steward ran a time of 18:12.54, sophomore Katie Schwartzkopf not far behind at 18:25.01 in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. In the men's 1,500 meters, junior Tommy Hazen (2nd; 3:53.80) recorded a new personal best with senior Jack Vincent (3rd; 3:54.01) right behind.
 
K-State will finish up the regular season with the Shocker Open next Friday (May 3) hosted by WSU in Wichita, Kan., at Cessna Stadium.
