Cats’ NCAA Run Ends in Charlottesville Super Regional
Jun 08, 2024 | Baseball
K-State finished its season 35-26, as the 2024 campaign marked the program's second trip to the Super Regional round and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013. The Cavaliers, who improved to 46-15, advanced to the 2024 College World Series, beginning June 14 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.
"Just disappointed for our program, but happy to take the next step," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Gotta get better. We're going to close the gap. We were really close, but we didn't come here to get close. We came to Kansas State to get to Omaha. I don't know exactly what it looks like, but you can see it. We plan on getting there."
Jackson Wentworth was credited with the loss and logged six innings in his eighth start of the season (5-6). The redshirt-sophomore surrendered four runs – all earned – on eight hits with five strikeouts. After allowing two runs in the first inning, the native of Urbandale, Iowa, held UVA to two runs over five innings and retired the Cavaliers in order in the second and fourth.
With his five strikeouts Saturday, Wentworth finishes the season with 115, which is second in the single-season records and three short of matching Jordan Wicks' record.
Brendan Jones and Kyan Lodice each belted a solo home run, while Lodice led going 2-for-3 at the plate. Jones stole his 40th base of the season, finishing second in the single-season records.
THE RUNDOWN
With two outs, UVA opened with a 2-0 lead in the opening frame with a solo shot to center from Casey Saucke and RBI single by Harrison Didawick.
The Cats responded in the bottom of the inning, as Brendan Jones was issued a walk to lead off the inning until the junior stole his 40th base of the season to move into scoring position. Kyan Lodice laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Jones before Kaelen Culpepper lifted a 0-2 pitch to the warning track in centerfield to make it a one-run ballgame.
Wentworth retired the Cavaliers in order to bring the Cats back up to the plate. Back-to-back singles from Nick English and David Bishop started off the second until a grounder to short by Jaden Parsons plate the tying-run.
The two squads remained locked at 2-2 as each put zeros on the board in the third and fourth.
UVA put together a trio of hits to load the bases, until Henry Ford delivered a two-out single out of range of the Cats' diving third baseman and helped the Cavaliers to a two-run lead, 4-2.
Jones launched his ninth homer of the season 440-feet over the right center wall to bring the game back within one, as the junior centerfielder unloaded on the first pitch.
With one out, Ingram doubled off the centerfield wall, leading UVA to make its first call to the bullpen and bring left-handed reliever Angelo Tonas to the mound. Tonas picked up two quick outs to end the rally.
The Cavaliers tagged on a run in the eighth to stretch their lead to two, 5-3, but was answered with a solo blast from Lodice. The Omaha, Neb., product belted his fourth homer of the season into centerfield to bring the game back within one for the third time of the day.
UVA put the game away in the ninth, scoring five unanswered runs in the final inning.
