K-State Drops Season-Opener to Nevada

Aug 15, 2024 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State started its ninth season of action on Thursday night at Buser Family Park, but Nevada spoiled the fanfare with a 2-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nevada (1-0-0) tallied the only goal in the first half. The Wolf Pack scored on a counter attack, as Emily Rich crossed a ball on the ground that skittered across the 18-yard box and found the right foot of Olivia Loomis in the 15th minute.
- K-State (0-1-0) outshot Nevada in the opening half, 12-5, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
- The Wildcats nearly squared the match in the dying seconds of the first half. Porter List played a long free kick into the Nevada box. Khaliana Garrett muscled her way to the ball and her right foot attempt was deflected by Wolf Pack goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki with three seconds left.
- The Wolf Pack went up by two goals in the 49th minute. Rich recorded her second assist of the night, as she drew the attention of K-State goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff and slid a pass to Penny Murphy who finished into an open goal from eight yards.
- In the 79th minute, K-State pulled back to within one, 2-1. List slid a pass ahead to Jayce Woodward. The junior from Seattle, Washington, fended off a Nevada defender and finished into the lower left corner from 15 yards. The goal was the first of Woodward's collegiate career, as she played her first two seasons at USC.
- Woodward led the Wildcats with four shots and three on goal.
- K-State held a 20-15 edge in shots and an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On his overall thoughts on the game and the positive takeaways …
"I think maybe the last 20 minutes of the first half and last 20 minutes of  the second half. You know, the mentality part was just not there from the beginning, and wasn't there until we dug ourselves a hole, and then we started picking it up when we were battling time. And it's just unfortunate. It's unacceptable to be fair. We just have got to be better, from the mentality side of things. I thought we were the better team. But, we can't go into matches not focusing on bringing the nonnegotiable, that's the urgency and the effort. And I felt like that was inconsistent tonight."

On what made Nevada tough tonight…
"We prepared for them to play us in a different formation, and they threw a curveball at us, so we had to adjust. And we've been training in our normal formation, but we had to make an adjustment. That's what kind of brought us back into the game. If I would have did it sooner, I think it would have helped us. But we got to take some positives and that's, us keeping the ball for a while, but we just could not find another goal."

On Jayce Woodward in her Wildcat debut  …
"I mean, she scored a goal. I thought in the second half, especially when she came back in on the field, she did a good job for us. But I also felt like, you know, she has more in the tank, and hopefully she learns and she comes back with a little bit more selfishness, and I think that's what she was lacking in the first half."

UP NEXT
K-State returns to action on Thursday, August 22, as the Wildcats visit the Pacific Northwest to face Portland State. Match time is set for 3 p.m. (CT) and can be watched on ESPN+.
