K-State Claims Both Wins Over Drake in Doubleheader

Jan 25, 2025 | Tennis

The Wildcats secured a 7-0 and 4-0 win over the Bulldogs

The K-State women's tennis team were victorious in the first two dual matches of the spring on Saturday (Jan. 25) in a doubleheader against Drake at Body First Tennis Center.

In the first match, the Bulldogs (0-2) forfeited one doubles match and two singles due to a shortage of players, the Wildcats winning 7-0. In the second match, Drake forfeited two singles matches again, K-State (2-0) becoming victorious 4-0 after starting with singles matches and clinching the win on two courts, not necessary to advance to doubles play.

"Just happy to get through two wins today," head coach Jordan Smith said. "Never easy having to do back-to-back matches against the same team, so credit to our players for staying mentally in check."

During the first match, the Cats split the doubles matches 1-1, senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos successful 6-2 over Elizabete Klavinska and Jessica Popiol in the no. 1 spot. Sophomores Charlotte Keitel and Maralgoo Chogsomjav won via forfeit in the no. 3 spot.

Sophomores Zali Morris and Tereza Polakova fell short in the no. 2 position to Tess Caldicott and Nicole Lee, 3-6.

In singles play, Chogsomjav, Keitel and Polakova were all successful in straight sets. Chogsomjav defeated Popiol in similar scoring sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the no. 2 spot, Keitel defeated Klavinska in the no. 1 position 6-2, 6-1 and Polakova left Lee scoreless in the first set winning 6-0, 6-2 in the no. 3 spot.

Santos played an 8 game pro set against Caldicott coming out victorious 8-3 in the no. 4 position to secure a 7-0 team win.

In the second match, with a 2-0 advantage after two wins via Bulldogs forfeits, Polakova won due to an injury retire from Popiol, 6-0, 3-0, in the no. 3 spot. Chogsomjav left Lee scoreless, 6-0, 6-0, in the no. 2 position.

Kulhava's match against Caldicott went unfinished after securing the first set in a 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker in the no. 4 spot. Keitel's match against Klavinska went unfinished in the no. 1 position as the Wildcats already clinched the match 4-0.

"I'm really proud of them, that was very unique situation for us, playing a team without a full lineup," Smith said. "I thought more pressure on us, because we're expected to do something. So credit to our young ladies for actually going out of our way and just stepping up and just taking care of business, so I'm really proud of that. We know we're not going to have days where we have that kind of advantage so we know we still need to be prepared and do our best, going into next weekend against a really good Wichita State team."

Continuing the home stand, K-State will host Wichita State (1-2) on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 12 p.m. at Body First Tennis Center.
