Myers’ Record-Breaking Night Powers Cats’ Five-Set Victory

Oct 01, 2025 | Volleyball

MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Senior Shaylee Myers' record-breaking 34 kills highlighted K-State's five-set victory (25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-27, 20-18) over West Virginia, as the Wildcats rallied to secure their first Big 12 win of the season Wednesday night at WVU Coliseum.

A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Myers became the first player in the rally-scoring era to reach 34 kills in a single match and only the fourth in program history to achieve the milestone, joining K-State greats Dawn Cady, Kathy Saxton, and Liz Wegner-Busch.

K-State (8-3, 1-2 Big 12) battled back from a six-point deficit in a decisive fifth set to extend its win streak over WVU to six, dating back to 2022. The Wildcats have now taken nine of the last 10 matches against the Mountaineers (12-2, 0-2 Big 12), that includes six consectutive victories in Morgantown.

Myers and Aniya Clinton combined for 59 of the Wildcats' 77 kills, with Myers leading all players with 34. Myers' performance not only marked the most kills by any Big 12 player in a single match this season but also made her one of just two players in the league to record a 30-kill match.

Additionally, Myers is now the second player in school history to total 39.5 or more points in a match, setting a rally-scoring era record. She also matched the program-record for service aces in a five-set match, becoming the fifth player in the rally scoring era to tally five in a five-set match.

Clinton added 25 kills, matching her career high, as Wednesday's match marked the first time this season that two Wildcats each recorded 20 or more kills in the same contest. Setter Ava LeGrand dished out a career-high 59 assists and added 14 digs to turn in her fourth double-double of the season, while Symone Sims led all players with 20 digs.

FROM THE CATS
JASON MANSFIELD, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Overall comments…
"Such a gritty performance by the girls tonight, so proud of their fight. I thought we made enough plays to win the first and second, but we couldn't really slow them down at the net the whole night and it caught up with us in the third and fourth sets. To be down 5-0 to start the fifth is obviously not ideal but to be able to chip away and switch only down 8-6 was huge. From there I thought we played such good volleyball, so steady and aggressive."

On LeGrand and Sims performances…
"Ava [LeGrand] ran a great offense tonight, so many good choices and she located extremely well. Symone [Sims] controlled our serve-receive so well all night, especially early. She has been flying around on defense too these last couple of matches and we needed all of her 20 digs tonight."

On Myers and Clinton's career-nights…
"Shaylee and Aniya were exceptional tonight. For them both to take 64 swings each and attack that efficiently is unreal but 34 kills by Shaylee and setting the single-match record is special. The fact that she hit .453 is crazy but that's what she's capable of, hopefully this gives her a bunch of confidence moving forward."
